Is Sandboxie the right solution for me?

Post by Lumute » Tue Dec 13, 2016 5:18 pm

Hi All,

I was wondering if Sandboxie is can help me, let me explain my requirement:

I run an proprietary application that contains a bunch of DLLs that need to be registered for it to work and uses an SQL database, it is really important that the version of the DLLs in use match the database version or otherwise you get a bunch of error and also risk corrupting the data in the database.

I need to be able to have multiple versions of this application, I do have SQL server installed on my PC with many databases loaded on different versions but due to this DLL registration / version issue I can only have 1 version of the app installed at a time on the computer which is a mayor pita. Right now I am solving this issue with VMWare Workstation and multiple VM's (kind of a big sandbox) running in my PC, each one with a different version of the application pointing to the right Database. As you can imagine a whole VM with its own operating system for each version of the application has huge overhead and other implications, needs separate management (updates / patches), etc. Not the ideal solution...

I was wondering if Sandboxie would be a much better solution?

With sandboxie, would I be able to use a separate sandbox for each version of the same application and keep all DLL registrations, etc. independent? do the sandboxes forget all DLL registrations and changes when the application stops running or is it possible to maintain a sandbox state over time?

Hello Lumute,

Sandboxie was not designed for this purpose (it is not a VM). Depending on the program, you may or may not be able to run multiple instances of it in different Sandboxes.

Barb.-
