Adobe Protected mode printing - fixed?

Probably in Sandboxie, although I don't know exactly what I fixed. In any case, I'm glad to hear the good news about this.

Thinking about this some more, I forgot that I had to change my motherboard and processor; moving from an E8300 to i3-3220 (Ivy Bridge).

Is it possible that the additional horsepower has been the reason for the change and not either Abobe or Sandboxie?

I don't think it is the extra performance but maybe changing hardware had something to do with it.

But I still think it's more likely that this was fixed because something changed in Sandboxie. When working on version 3.74, I encountered a computer where printing from IE caused IE to crash. Diagnosing the problem I saw it was due to the wrong version of some DLL that was loaded during printing. I did not have easy access to the computer so I couldn't figure out exactly why this happened, but then a few revisions later the problem disappeared.

Because the SandboxieRpcSs program plays a role in selecting which DLL gets loaded, I suspect it could be a variant of the problem discussed in this topic:

This topic discusses a scenario where changing compatibility settings in Windows would confuse SandboxieRpcSs.

I don't have more insight to share about this problem, all I can say is that it is possible the printing issue I encountered is the same as the printing issue you encountered, and that something I changed in version 3.74 had a positive effect on both issues.
