Is it possible to drag URL shortcut to desktop?

It seems no longer possible to drag an internet URL from the browser's address bar to the desktop or to a file folder in any browser.
Instead, I have to copy the URL, then create a shortcut on the desktop, and past the URL into the shortcut, then name the shortcut. This is a lot more work than dragging the shortcut.
Saving the URL as favorites in the browser could work, but the favorite is only accessible within one browser. I want to save favorites in a common location. There is a firefox plug-in to share favorites between IE and firefox, but I also want chrome to work.
Any ideas?
