kmdutil.exe failed

Post by Jamie » Wed Dec 26, 2007 1:57 am

I can't start the latest Sandboxie Portable at all. Everytime I try to start it I will get a KmdUtil.exe failed error. I tried manually extracting the KmdUtil.exe and place it in Installer and also Sandboxie folder but still failed. There's also no such help in the readme file.

Can anyone please offer some help. Many Thanks.

Have you tried installing Sandboxie normally? Does it work? I'm going to guess that it will not, since my launcher now uses the official installer, no more tricks.

Please post back what versions of everything you are trying, and if Sandboxie will install normally.

KmdUtil.exe Failed

Thanks wraithdu for your reply. I'm using your latest version of SandboxiePortable and also the latest Sandboxie installer.

LAUNCHER VERSION: 2.3.0.4
INSTALLER VERSION: 1.0.1.1
Sandboxie Version: 3.21

I am able to install and run Sanboxie normally and without any error but the portable one still can't. When installing the portable version, I just chose to locate the SandboxieInstaller.exe but not the INI file. I'm currently using your SandboxiePortable 2.2.2.3 and it has worked great so far. Thanks for your help and I really wished to try your new version as its easier to upgrade in the future.

I seem to remember a problem with the silent install feature of the official stable 3.21 installer. Please try the latest test release (soon to go final) and let me know if it works now. This could be why you can install it normally, but the silent install feature used by my launcher doesn't work.

I'm trying to replace my old SandboxiePortable (2.2.1.4) with this new version (2.3.0.4)

I followed all instructions to the best of my ability, but can't get it working.

Here is what I tried ...
_ 1) Download SandboxiePortable_2.3.0.4.exe
_ 2) Download SandboxisInstall.exe -- (version 3.21)
_ 3) Run SandboxiePortable_2.3.0.4.exe, follow instructions
. . . (I chose to point to SandboxisInstall.exe when requested)
_ 4) Run SandboxiePortable.exe

I get is a tray icon with exclamation sign which flashes.
If I right click on this tray-icon, I get 2 options ...
_ A) Show Errors -- This does nothing !
_ B) Exit -- runs cleanup which gives the following error ...
. . . "KmdUtil failed. installation or uninstallation may not be complete."

Can anyone tell me where I went wrong?
Perhaps this problem is related to Wrathdu's last post with the silent install feature of 3.21?

Regards
Lyndon

It is. Please download the latest test version from the post above and all should be well. I'll put a note about this in the first post until the new stable version is released (should be soon). Sorry, I should have mentioned something about it, but I forgot :(

UPDATED - installer v1.0.1.2, Updater utility

Post by wraithdu » Fri Dec 28, 2007 10:29 am

** UPDATE **

I've written an Updater utility to simplify updating to a new version of Sandboxie. See details in the first post.

Installer updated to include new utility.

** SMALL UPDATE **

New version of the Updater utility allows you to have the Sandboxie installer automatically deleted after updating (just a convenience thing). Installer package is updated accordingly.

problem with the sandbox path

Post by Unknown_User_1181 » Sat Jan 05, 2008 8:59 pm

Hi there?

How can i tell my portable sandboxie to write his sandbox files (originally in C:\SANDBOX) to the path (SANDBOXROOTFOLDER)\DATA\SANDBOX\%USER%\%SANDBOX%\

I was trying to do this in hope that i could make it trully portable (don't write anything but the registry keys to the computer)
is this possible?

I've searched the whole forum and i can't get an answer for what to put instead of (SANDBOXROOTFOLDER)
I've also tryed %LaunchDir% and oddly it works but it keeps giving me errors saying it can't copy files to that location (a usb drive)

I'm using PortableSandboxie.exe 2.3.0.4
and Sandboxie.exe 3.21.15

Thanks for this great software
Hope someone can help me with this.

You are correct to use %LaunchDir%, ie

FileRootPath=%LaunchDir%\DATA\SANDBOX\%USER%\%SANDBOX%

What file copy errors are you receiving exactly? This could be something to do with permissions on your USB drive, or the app folder in particular. I doubt it's anything to do with the portable launcher. Do you get errors if you use a complete path, ie

FileRootPath=E:\SandboxiePortable\DATA\SANDBOX\%USER%\%SANDBOX%

where E:\ is the drive letter of your USB drive? You'll have to check the drive letter and change it in you INI file before running Sandboxie.

PLEASE READ THE README.TXT DURING INSTALLATION FOR INSTRUCTIONS

** DO NOT USE on a system with a locally installed version of Sandboxie!!

<-- NOW packaged as an installer!! -->

SandboxiePortable now uses the official Sandboxie installer. This has several benefits. Installation is now much simpler, you don't have to manually extract anything. Since the installer cleans up everything upon removal, you can now use the shell / sendto extensions portably.

I've also included an Updater utility to simplify updating to a new version of Sandboxie. It is located in the same directory as the launcher. A separate download link is below for users who do not need to update the whole package. Place the Updater in the same directory as the launcher.

** NOTE TO USERS UPGRADING FROM 3.01.21 or 3.02 -

The new GUI versions of Sandboxie use a new layout for the INI file. DO NOT use your old INI file directly with this new portable version of Sandboxie. Run the launcher once and let it copy a default INI to the application directory, then modify your settings via the GUI.

No, sorry but I can't. The launcher makes use of Sandboxie's silent install and silent uninstall features. I do not modify the Sandboxie program or files (except the INI) in any way.

Be aware when using this launcher that when you shut down Sandboxie Control, the program is totally removed (ie uninstalled). Are you sure this is the functionality you want?
