SBIE2224 w/Chrome, Win 7 64-bit...Says program crashed, but program hasn't crashed.

SBIE2224 Sandboxed program has crashed: software_reporter_tool.exe [DefaultBox]

Hello and thanks for reading. Sandboxie has been installed for years, but this error arose just recently. Occurs every time I load Sandboxie (now v5.20) after booting my PC. Says "Sandboxed program has crashed..." (see above) when I load up Chrome, but then I close the error box and Chrome runs just fine (as does, it would seem, Sandboxie).

Running Win 7 64-bit. Chrome is latest version.

Not sure how to tell exactly what's loading with Chrome, if that's the issue. I've got Adblock Plus and Ghostery both installed. Also Acrobat Reader. Think Adobe Flash is running too, though I often have problems with it/it gets blocked.

Not sure this is a big deal, other than having to close the error message, so long as Sandboxie's protection is intact. Happy to help troubleshoot, with a little guidance.

Thanks,

ELB

Hello MrELB,

Does the issue occur in a specific Sandbox? Have you tried deleting the contents of it?
Try to launch Chrome outside Sandboxie and clear its cache / ensure there are no errors there.

To clarify:
As soon as you boot your PC, you get the error message without manually invoking Chrome, correct?
Do you have any antivirus software installed?

Barb.-

If software_reporter_tool.exe is the only thing crashing then it should be safe to ignore. It actually isn't even a required component. All it really does is inspect your installed programs and share the information.

In fact some people, like myself, don't allow it to run at all. This can be achieved by using Sandbox Settings > Restrictions > Start/Run Access or if you don't want to use run restrictions something like Sandbox Settings > Resource Access > File Access > Blocked Access > Add > *\SwReporter would also prevent it from ever running.

Thanks for the reply, Barb. The crash occurs when I manually invoke Chrome after startup. It does not crash again if I close and reopen Chrome without shutting down.

I will try launching Chrome normally and clearing the cache before starting up the Sandboxed version.

I didn't know that the reporter tool is only one component of Sandboxie and nonessential. I will do this as a workaround if I can't find an actual fix for the issue.

Thanks,

It's actually a part of chrome, not sandboxie. I did test this myself and for some reason the original string as I posted didn't quite prevent total access via chrome when it downloaded a new version. So it might be better to try *\SwReporter* eg add another asterix onto the end of the last one I posted assuming it comes down to using that option.
