I have been having the very same problem for 3 or 4 weeks. I suspected that the problem is related to my software firewall - Online Armor - so I uninstalled it and rebooted several times. Each time Sandboxie started up perfectly. I then reinstalled Online Armor and the first time I rebooted, the problem reappeared. At the moment, each time it happens, I go to Services and start the Sandboxie service and reset to automatic, not that it helps any.

I don't know if you want to go to the trouble of uninstalling you Norton security and seeing if the problem goes away? But then again, I imagine that, like me, even if you prove the problem originates in the security software, you'll still want to reinstall it afterwards and, like me, start Sandboxie service by hand at least for the moment.

I've since tried deactivationg the HIPS feature in Online Armor then resetting the Sandboxie service to automatic, rebootin,g and then reactivationg the HIPS in Online Armor. I've rebooted several times and so far Sandboxie seems to be working without problem. I don't understand any of this but so far it seems to be working.

Did you recently use any of those "restore-on-system-reboot" type software?
Hi.

Nothing else gets reverted at boot.

I'm running beta version 3.55.06 64 bit just now. I unchecked 'start with Windows' then rebooted and the 'Sandboxie Control' didn't start with Windows. I then rechecked the 'start with Windows' rebooted and it still wouldn't start with Windows.

I have to start Sandboxie Control manually, I get the UAC pop up and allow it then I get this error - SBIE2313 Could not execute SbieCtrl.exe (740).
When I close the error message Sandboxie Control is running fine and I can use Sandboxie no problems.

If close Sandboxie Control then reopen it, UAC pops up again and I allow Sandboxie to run but this time I don't get any error message. I always get the error message once, the first time I start Sandboxie Control after booting, then after that I can close and reopen Sandboxie Control as often as I like without that error message popping up.

The Sandboxie service is automatic and running at boot.
The Sandboxie Control has administrator privilege level checked (it's greyed out and checked).

Here's a couple of screenshots of the permissions.

Firstly this is of the Start Menu shortcut...

This one is for the SbieCtrl.exe file located in Program Files...

The Administrators listing has the same permissions as the system one in that last screen shot.
I run this PC as administrator.

Edit -

Just to add, I disabled everything in Norton 2011 anti virus, reboot, and I still get the same issues. I use Windows firewall.

Several days and many reboots later and I have not had a recurrence of the service failing to start - and, by now, it certainly would have done so.

So, in my case, deactivating the HIPS feature in the forewall, resetting the SB service to auto, rebooting and then reactivating HIPS, solved the problem. Lord knows why.

Try disabling the Windows firewall - with your Internet connection disabled/unplugged and see if that has any effect.

If not, perhaps try some clean boot troubleshooting and see if you can track down an offending program.

I went into msconfig and tried a selective start up with only Sbie.ctrl.exe allowed to start, rebooted and I still have the same issue.
I then went in and chose diagnostic start up, rebooted but still had the same problem.

I don't want to give you any unnecessary work, but I can tell you that I had a problem recently trying to get the Windows Virtual Machine to install and I tried all the clean boot troubleshooting stuff and disabled everything I could in my Online Armor firewall/security software and the problem persisted. It was only when I uninstalled Online Armor would Virtual Machine install. I then reinstalled Online Armor and everything worked fine. What I learned from that is that the modern security software can still be working in the background giving some protection even when you think you have completely disabled it. I find that quite reassuring.

So if you really want to be sure you've eliminated the possibility of the Norton suite causing the problem, you should try uninstalling Norton and seeing if that allows Sandboxie to work. I know that's a fair bit of work but I wasted quite a bit of time messing around until I finally bit the bullet and uninstalled Online Armor after wrongly convincing myself that disabling it was the same as uninstalling it. At least if you try it and it doesn't fix it, you know for sure that Norton is not the problem. I'd also try a complete uninstall of SB rather than an overwrite whislt Norton was uninstalled but only if the first attempt to run SB didn't prove successful. (And disconnected from the Internet of course for added peace of mind.)
