Firefox and IE won't work [SOLVED]

Post by Bellzemos » Thu Jan 05, 2017 5:02 pm

Hello!

A loooongtime happy user with lots of experience here. I have the lifetime license for any computer I personally own and I've used Sandboxie on XP, 7 and 8.1, on many laptops and desktops, many brands I owned.

Today I have instelled it on a desktop I just got, it's a Windows 8.1 Pro x64 machine, fresh install, just OS and drivers. AV is Windows Defender, I tried disabling it too, doesn't help. The system has i5 CPU, 4 GB RAM and a HDD.

The problem is: if I run Firefox or Internet Explorer sandboxed, they eat 25% of the CPU, take forever to start and won't respond - compeltely unusable. Both browsers run fine outside of the sandbox on the same machine.

I'm using Sandboxie 5.16, I have a feeling it's something about the later/latest version... Cause I never had such problems in the past. Has anyone reported anything like that, is there a solution?

Thanx!

Forgot to mention, I also run the latest Sandboxie on a Windows 10 machine at work (Commercial license), so it works on XP, 7, 8.1 and 10, 32 and 64 bit systems. I don't know what's the problem with the particular one from my last post. Any idea?

Not much comes to my mind, maybe someone else will have more helpful thoughts. I've noticed a few threads recently about 5.16+FF but haven't seen much about IE. Do you by chance have an NVIDIA gpu/drivers installed? Maybe tweaked much in the way of group policy, srp, or applocker?

If no one else pops up with a better idea by the time you read this, could you use procmon and start logging before running Firefox or IE so we can see what things are trying to do while causing this constant cpu usage?

Bellzemos,

Are you starting the browsers with a specific home page ?
Is multi-process enabled (for FF)? (If so, please disable it and test).

Are there any toolbars installed on the browsers so that I can test this?

Barb.-

No nVidia drivers, the machine only has the onboard Intel GPU. It's a fresh Windows install so no messing with group policy, srp, or applocker.

@ Barb - I'm starting FF with it's homepage and IE with www.google.com, so nothing different than with my other machines. Where can I check/disable multi-process for FF? There are no toolbars for IE 11 and only AdBlocker for FF.

The same configuration works flawlessly on my other machines (Win 7 x64 and Win 10 x64).

Bellzemos,

http://www.ghacks.net/2016/07/22/multi-process-firefox/ scroll down until you find " Enable / Disable Electrolysis in Firefox " .

As Syrinx mentioned, maybe procmon can help us figure this out.
You can also post your Resource Access Monitor output.

According to the article from the link, my "browser.tabs.remote.autostart" is set to "false" in FF. The article doesn't say anything about the "browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2" though, which is set to true in FF. But changing it to "false" doesn't make a change to my PC's behaviour.

Anyway, I think it's a hardware problem of sorts...

I was able to fix the startup of sandboxed IE and FF by resetting the BIOS to default values. This setting was the problem (when it was enabled FF and IE wouldn't even properly start sandboxed):

But I still have huge issues as Firefox won't work (I'm not even texting IE now) cause of the crazy amount of RAM that the machine's eating:

And when it's idle (no FF running) it's about 85%-90%, so something's wrong, but not with Sandboxie.

Thank you for help. I don't know how to find the RAM-eating culprit...

OK, I disabled Windows Defender and now RAM is about 50% at most.

Bbut FF and IE still eat about 30%-35% CPU when sandboxed and they won't work (almost 30 seconds to startup, unable to search, slugish). Unsandboxed they start up and work fine. So maybe it IS a Sandboxie problem? What can I try?

I never before had a need to do this, how do I go about it?

Hi Bellzemos,

Just for testing purposes, can you let us know if Chrome works? Is there anything else running on the computer while opening the browsers?

As for procmon, download from here https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sys ... nitor.aspx
Launch it, reproduce the issue in SBIE, stop procmon (hit the magnifying glass) .
Go to File-->Save and upload the log (you may need a free file hosting site as the logs tend to be big).

Regards,
Barb.-

Hi Barb,

I won't install Chrome cause I don't like it and don't want it on my PC.

I've run ProcMon and saved 2 logs, one where I try starting sandboxed FF and another one where I try starting sandboxed IE. RAM is now around 65%, with the Windows Defender disabled. CPU gets over 30% when trying to start IE or FF. Weird!

Please download the file from here:
http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?fi ... 9347221322

Thank you for the help.

OK, I just found out that my kid is messign around trying stuff as always and he installed a Sandboxie crack on the new PC. I'm against piracy, esp for small companies but I won't forbid him learning, even the crack stuff. I always use my lifetime license for my own PCs and Commercial licenses for business. I even asked Sandboxie originator about piracy when Sandboxie only needed a serial number to be activated and then he hardened the protection against piracy, here (the 10th line in my original 7 year old post):
http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... f=5&t=7359

Anyway, I'll fix this with him and get back to you for the weekend or sooner, when I have some free time. Hoperfully removing it will already solve the problem. Thanx for now.

I'm surprised someone security conscious enough to use Sandboxie (a long-time user at that) would allow someone to install cracked software on their machine -- especially a hacked driver. That is just asking to be rootkitted.

Several months ago I tried out several of the cracked Sbie's on the web (in a VM, off network, which I totally destroyed afterwards). All of them were either malware, adware, or totally nonfunctional.

Don't let me star on all he's done so far with all kinds of programs. But I always make Acronis or Macrium images before I let him experiment so it's no harm done. He said the crack is nonfunctional anyway as it says the program is activated but the registered-only functions don't work.

Anyway, I'll wipe it and deploy image again and try it again, alone this time. Hope it works, if not, I'll get back to you.
