Sandboxie and VirtualBox

Post by teomc1 » Fri Nov 25, 2016 6:28 am

Hi,

I am using VirtualBox 5.0.x and Sandboxie 5.14.

1. Can I safely run VirtualBox in sandboxed mode? I want to browse the Internet and perform file downloads from within various Windows/Linux VMs I have installed in VirtualBox.
Will Sandboxie contribute to the security of my VirtualBox operations, thus protecting the host OS (Windows 8.1)?

2. Would Sandboxie interfere in some way with the functions of VirtualBox (host-only networking, for example)?

Thank you in advance!

VirtualBox and VMWare Workstation/Player are full virtualization softwares that include many drivers and services. I've never so much as tried sandboxing the primary vmare-vmx.exe or the the virtualbox equivalent as that'd be pointless even if the GUI ran inside. If you have something running that uses a service or a driver already active on the system [read already has kernel components], sandboxie will be next to useless in these cases. I'm tempted to expand and perhaps laugh....but I'll drink another beer and go to bed instead.

Hello teomc1,

I am not sure that you will be able to get VirtualBox to work inside Sandboxie. However, you could try doing the opposite:
Install Sandboxie inside your VMs (Here are the supported OS--> https://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?Fre ... quirements ).

Regards.
