Upgrade 2.86-3.00 fail, needed to revert

Post by SfoGuy » Sun Jul 15, 2007 7:25 am

I ran the 32-bit installer and it detected my existing 2.86 and asked if I wanted to upgrade. I selected that option and the installation went perfectly, requiring a re-boot to remove the old driver and install the new one. But then I could get no program at all to run sandboxed. Sandboxie returned the following error every time:

SBIE1406 Missing or invalid expansion for ALLUSERSPROFILE [C0000034]
SBIE1203 Cannot build path list (error in OpenPipePath)

I had my AV off during the install, no errors were reported at all. I re-booted again with the same result. I re-installed over the same install, and that didn't help. Then I removed the entire installation and re-installed it and got the same error. It didn't matter how many times I installed or rebooted, or what the sequence was, it never worked and always returned the same error.

So I un-installed and reinstalled 2.86. That installation went just like all the others, except Sandboxie then began to work as before, no problems. So I'm right back where I was only with an hour or two missing and a few brain cells less, thank you very much.

My system is running WinXP Home with SP 2 and no special programs or configuration. The bottom line is that there is something very different about 3.0 that prevents it from working on my system. And whatever it is that 3.0 doesn't like about my system,it's no problem at all for 2.86.

Yes, of course there are some changes. Would you like to work together with me and try to figure out what the problem is?

Sure, I'll be glad to help. So far the only knobs I have to tweak are in the installation process. Do you have any other suggestions? The only other relevant fact I can think of is that the My Documents, Favorites, and Startup folders on this system is pointed to the All Users documents rather than a specific user so that both logins share them transparently. Other than that, I'm at a loss as to what else to do. The only tool I have here is a rather simian trial & error method.

The problem seems to be related to this. In that you have some Sandboxie settings that directly or indirectly reference a per-user expansion variable named ALLUSERSPROFILE. And Sandboxie doesn't yet know how to expand ALLUSERSPROFILE.

I revised this for the next minor version, which I will release later today, and when you upgrade I expect you will see an improvement.

It works!

I downloaded it and installed it over my existing 2.86 version. One reboot and then I gave it a try. It's working like advertised! In fact, I'm writing this in a sandboxed IE7. When I first started an instance of IE7 it wouldn't connect to the Internet. So I closed it out and then tried again and it works just fine. I'll check that to see if it was an anomaly or if there's something there that might interest you.

I haven't tried web cams and some of the other new features yet. I'll do that after I verify that I have everything I had before. At first glance, it all seems to be working so you certainly solved the ALLUSERS problem I had before. But I'll take the next few days and look for any problems I think you'll want to know about.

My setup must be pretty unique -- I thought it made sense if both I and the wife were going to use the computer with different logins but wanted to share all the files with minimal trouble. But it looks like I might be the only one in the forum so far doing this.

Thanks for motivating me to think of what that error code might be suggesting, and thanks a heap for fixing the problem.

Regards,
Guy
