Feature - Temporarily Revoke Drop Rights?

Post by Simple_One » Sat Oct 27, 2012 3:26 am

Hi,

Is it possible to implement a feature (or is there one already, I had a look but may have missed it...) to temporarily revoke/override the Drop Rights setting that is applied to a specific Sandbox?

I realise fundamentally that this would be a security risk, but in certain instances I think it has it's uses. I would envisage it working much the same way that one can currently temporarily override the Forced Programs and Forced Folders (which is very handy every now and then as I'm discovering).

Scenario:
You are trying to migrate to a new OS, but to access the old folders you need to provide admin rights.
This is pretty much what I'm doing at the moment, using a portable application that is running in Sandboxie to synchronise folders from my old OS to the new installation. The problem is some of these folders ask for Admin rights to access them and since Sandboxie is set to Drop Rights, it prevents the portable app from doing so. Now obviously you can just disable Drop Rights, do your stuff and then turn it on again, but if time allows it would be great to see a feature introduced to remove the potential for operator error (i.e. forgetting to re-enable drop rights).

Any thoughts on this, is it a really dumb idea for a reason I haven't grasped?

Cheers

Apologies as well if this is in the wrong part of the forum, I'm not totally sure that such a feature does not already exist...

I'm sure it was requested. There are several useability aspects of Sandboxie that can be improved, this is one of them. Hopefully I will eventually get around to improving these.

It would be more secure IMO than the current system which means you have to remember to reset the drop-rights.

For that reason alone, I have set up separate sandboxes, but would much prefer a temporary drop; perhaps limited to the current session.
