Here is what you can do to gather data. You can use procmon and post the results to us. Procmon: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/lib ... 96645.aspx (free.)
Is this in effect the same as a dump file (created with Windows 7)? Because this (a dump file, concerning Firefox) I already uploaded, informing Curt who had suggested this measure:

Reporting back. Uninstalling SBie, restarting laptop and re-installing SBie did not do the trick.

IE9 and Chrome can be sandboxed (each in their own sandbox), only Firefox wont start sandboxed (addons disabled or enabled).

I did another clean reinstall of SB; FF would still not load into SB - however, after working in a SB'ed Iron browser session FF DID load into SB ------ once. I have not been able to repeat this.

No, this is not the same as a DMP. I don't see anything in your DMP but Firefox sitting there waiting. You will need to run Procmon and send us the PML file.

Before running ProcMon, exit as many applications as possible to try to cut down on the system activity. Start ProcMon, no need to change any options/settings, and try to launch Firefox. As soon as it hangs, stop the ProcMon. Save the output to a PML file, be sure to select "Save All Events", zip it (important!), and upload it somewhere so we can download it. You can PM me with the location.

Thats what I would do if I was using Norton and had this problem. After uninstalling Norton, if it is conflicting with SBIE, sandboxing Firefox should work perfectly well immediately after a reboot.

Yes, maybe. But then you do not longer have your Norton.

Done.

I made it under Shadow Defender (in order not to touch my original system) but I think that does not influence the result.

I was not completely sure how to do it (I clicked directly File ---> Save). But you will tell me if something went wrong.

Yes, but then you'll know for sure if Norton is causing the issue or not.....instead of spending 2 or 3 days trying to figure things out, you'll know in half an hour or less. :)

I uninstalled Norton and SB worked - I reinstalled Norton and SB worked one time and is now back to nada so the issue is definitely cased by Norton (which is my only active AV program)

Many thanks to "MDrew" for testing Norton !

A complaint to the support team: Weren't you able to include Norton into your verification ?

is of little use when most of us in the Forum report about problems with Norton.

Under XP (32bit) and Windows 8.1 (64bit) a have tested unsuccessfully disabling Norton, disabling extensions and reinstalling Firefox.

Dear Forum Members

I just want to tell you where I am at the moment:-

First, I have tried the "Real Time Exclusions" discovered by Craig here http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... 15#p115023

As the screen print shows, there are various program folders that are excluded (NB: There is no "Program Data" folder in XP so I substituted "Application Data" instead") and, as suggested, I added Sandboxie to my list of exclusions as well.

However, after adding all these "exclusions" within the AV part of my Norton Internet Security, Firefox would still not open when sandboxed, although Sandboxie itself seem to open a lot faster.

I have seen MDrew's latest posting and it is now obvious that Norton Anti-Virus is the main cause of this problem we are having and I am now sick and tried of Norton issuing updates that is screwing up my system and the way it works.

I am going to start looking around for another Internet Security software.

Thanks MDrew for testing it and telling us about the result.

After examining my PML file, Curt@invincea also got the impression that (at least in my case) Norton is responsible for some delays in starting Firefox in the sandbox which probably cause the issue.

The same here (even after adding some additional Mozilla folders to the exclusions). :(

The only cumbersome "method" for me how opening Firefox in the Sandbox "works", continues to be the following: I must start Firefox in the sandbox (as starting of the firefox.exe works but not opening the browser), then I must exit the sandbox and stop the Firefox-process in the taskbar manually. After doing this several times (before at least 5 or 6 times) I maybe lucky and Firefox finally will open.

I cannot understand why suddenly this problem arises for several users at the same time - all of us presumably users of Norton (and of Sandboxie) already for a l longer time (in my case years) and without having made recently some fundamental change in our systems.

And surely it is not simply a problem of Norton (plus Firefox) itself but a problem in combination with Sandboxie because outside of Sandboxie Firefox continues to open/start without any problems and in the usual speed. So I must say that I feel a little bit worried that obviously no one of the experts can find out (or takes care?) which is the specific connection between Norton and Sandboxie (or vice versa) that could be the reason for the problem.

Of course this could be a solution, but it is a quite radical one. At the moment I still hope that there could exist some "softer" alternative.

When a new Beta is issued, we don't test AV.There are far too many, and they frequently cause issues with SBIE (The add-ons cause even more). You can search the forum over the years and see for yourself.

If users want to submit AV related issues, there is a thread for that. I've tested Norton (Comcast XFinity version, i.e. Norton360) on my home machine in Win 7/64 then I updated that box to Win 10 w/o issue.

However, as for A/V programs, we recommend MSE (Defender.) It's free, and it works well with SBIE.

Typical use of SBIE is to you SBIE as your primary defense..and then any A/V program. IF you SB gets infected, you simply delete it and move on.

A typical troubleshooting step is to have users disable A/V. If that doesn't work, removal. (i.e. like Kaspersky.) It's far faster for a user to diable/remove A/V than it is for me to download a trial, config a VM and hope it matches your configuration.

You can see the thread here regarding A/V programs. http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... 07#p111707

Why is that radical? The creator of SBIE has suggested that very thing in the past (and over the years)... We current suggest that very idea to Kaspersky users as it will not work with SBIE.

Again, I'll reiterate, if you're using SBIE, you're protected better than any A/V software could ever do. If you catch something in a SB session, you simply delete your SB and move about your day.

For tested A/V by us, and user submitted results, I urge you to check http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... 07#p111707

Granted, that topic was originally started for Win 10 issues, but it has evolved.

@richard329
I explicitly stated in my sticky that I did not test with any AV installed, nor did I test with Extensions/Addons. The test was to confirm installing browsers WITHIN SBIE. (Not running a browser off your host) So, that's not a complaint. That's more of not understanding what I was TESTING. As for Norton..Depends on what version of Norton/Symantec or Norton by Symantec and whether it is XP, 7, 8.1 or 10. The combination of those is ridiculous.

Why didn't I test A/V, etc.??

For one, A/V Products have a long history of being problematic w/ SBIE. This goes way, WAY back. The first thing I ask users w/ SBIE issues...Do you have A/V installed? Yes? Disable it. Still have issues? REMOVE it. Then try.

Two, Add-ons and extensions cause issues. I have no idea what any person may have installed extension/add-on wise. There are tens of thousands per browser. So we test CORE browser functionality. Issues? Disable add-ons/extensions.

Three, the test was to confirm installation of a browser WITHIN SBIE. Not to test Browser A with A/V solution B.

Bonus, there is a thread - from us...and user submitted data regarding A/V. Originally, it was for Win 10, but it has grown. I'll add that link.. again http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... 07#p111707
