PDF web pages when browser is sandboxed ?

Post by bawldiggle » Thu Jul 03, 2014 5:03 pm

I am reading through FAQs before downloading and trialing Sandboxie Free.
Trying to make an informed decision ... there is a lot to take-in.
- not exactly a "Quick Question" ... but I don't have an issue with Sandboxie either

-----
EDIT ... see "Update" at foot of this post
-----

In FAQs Overview > What kinds of programs can I run using Sandboxie? the explanation lists ...
  • • Web browsers
    • mail and news readers
    • instant messengers and chat clients
    • peer-to-peer networking
    • games
Q1: If I am browsing (with Palemoon-mozilla) in Sandboxie and encounter a PDF page, how is my PDF-program (PDF-XChange Pro) accessed, or does PDF-program have to be sandboxed too. ?
Same question for downloaded AutoCad files ... would existing AutoCad (aka, AC) program have to be sandboxed to open a sandboxed file.
Which raises another question: can files be sandboxed. ?
I understand free Sandboxie limits one Sandboxed item at a time, whereas Sandboxie Pro allows multiple sandboxes ?

Q2: While browsing in Sandboxie if I open another program outside the sandbox (eg, a Text editor) can I copy from the sandboxed browser page and paste into the non-boxed program.
I appreciate Clipboard carries all data types ... and possibly (?) the risk of unseen transfers into say MS Word.

Q3: When trialing downloaded programs, can I install the program in Sandboxie ?
There is a lot of sneakware around, there are several well known offenders ... and then the unknown!
If I can install a program in Sanboxie ... can I OK Sandboxie to "move" the sandboxed program onto the real-world, or does the new program have to be installed directly into the real-world ?

I would appreciate any advice or re-directing to any articles ... thank you :)

bawldiggle, if you are browsing running PM or Firefox sandboxed and you click on a PDF link, your PDf reader runs the PDF sandboxed.

In the free version you can not use multiple sandboxes at the same time. Using more than one sandbox at a time is one of the features that make Sandboxie a great program. But the free version is fantastic as it is and using it gives you a good taste of what SBIE is about. I suggest you test what Sandboxies free version has to offer and in a short while, you ll know if getting the license is worth it for you.

You can copy from a sandboxed browser and paste it to a (for example) text file. I copy to the clipboard all the time while running my PDF reader sandboxed..

Most programs install in a sandbox but not all. I find SBIE great for trialing things like browsers, addons, Java, flash, PDF readers, video players, other plugins, etc. If you install something in a sandbox and you like the program, after deleting the sandbox you should install it in your real system. Sandboxie doesnt offer a "move" kind of option. Even if it did, I probably wouldn't use it.

You found a great program, I hope you like it as I do. Sandboxie is the most important program in my computer and the only one that I cant replace. When I am using my computers, I am always using SBIE. No matter what kind of program I am running, the program runs sandboxed.

Thanks Bo, I appreciate your response :)

With Free Sandboxie ... if Browser is sandboxed, will the PDF page render in the sandboxed browser as sandboxed-PDF ? Or will that only occur with the Pro version ?

In the last 7 hours (started at 4:30am) all I have done is read various links, FAQs, Video Reviews ... all on the SandBoxie site.

Fifteen minutes ago I found the very dated (2008) Test Center: Sandbox security versus the evil Web# ... a "Review from InfoWorld " link on the Video Reviews page.
A LOT of reading !

# I have some concerns about Adobe Flash Player which I will post in a new thread.

You are welcome, bawldiggle. :)

You get same protection running the browser sandboxed in the free as in the paid version. If you click on a PDF link while running sandboxed, the PDF runs in the sandbox where your sandboxed browser is running.

If you use the PDF plugin, the PDF displays within the browser. Or you can do like me. I don't install the plugin and when I click on a PDF link, the PDF runs sandboxed out of the browser.

The paid version makes things automatic, easier to get programs and files running sandboxed, less thinking required. More comfortable getting programs running sandboxed. And better isolation. By using multiple sandboxes, you separate programs from each other. Thats what the paid version gives you. And its plenty.

bawldiggle, Have you come across this link? Download Episode# 172. I like the 43MB audio file. Go to about minute 34 and you ll hear Tzuk 8) (original developer) talk about Sandboxie in the early days. I think its pretty good stuff and worth listening.

Thank you Bo for the link so much. I think I have never heard Tzuk speak before. Also Steve Gibson let him speak some, not just all his show with allowing only a few comments.

If I could change anything tzuk did, it was that decision about a lifetime support. The new Invincea model is much more to my liking. If Ronen had done the same decision change, perhaps he might still be with us leading the Sandboxie development. Developers must have their steady earnings just like the rest of us. This is just a speculatative thought anyways my friend, without knowing any better.
