gaming compatiblilty

Post by street011 » Mon May 14, 2007 2:52 am

Hey tzuk,

I install a lot of games on my pc, just to remove them again after a few days of trial... often those are demo's...
anyway, i think most of us know how dramaticaly windows slows down after a huge amount of installs/uninstalls...
a lot of junk is left behind.

It would be great if most if not all games would be playable inside sandboxie so all junk can be REALY removed.

Maybe it's a bit too risky or to hard to make it all work together, security/playability...
then maybe a "gaming mode" is some sort of an option...

i'd love to hear more ideas on this.

Well I have no magic answer except that I would also like to Sandboxie compatible with as much stuff as possible. But I'm glad that you say demos, it means I can easily download them and try to get them to install. Any link for a game demo that doesn't work sandboxed?

tzuk, try steam (www.steampowered.com) it fails to start anyway...

in case you don't know steam, it's a platform on wich a lot of games run (like counter-strike)

and in case the platform doesn't run, the game isn't even close to being able to run :)

gl! love to see results here

Works fine for me. First it updated itself, when it was done with that, I got a gray login window. I tried first installing into a sandbox, when that worked, I installed it outside, still worked.

Yep works here too, ive also tried some small demo games from Reflexive.net and BigFishGames, and those demo games work too, only think i havent tried (and wont do to the size of the games) are my "big" games like F.E.A.R, BattleField 2142, GTA:SA, Half-life series, Flatout 1&2, etc.. but im sure those would work too.

failed with error1: Failed create pipe....
Hmm, gives me an idea, try doing a PipeTrace and see if/whats blocked, cause it seems a certain resource is blocked and thats why it wont work for you.

I don't know about sound, but the last line in your trace, shows access to a pipe but without actually a pipe name. This is probably the problem, especially since you're getting an error about pipes. Almost certainly caused by a bug in Sandboxie, but if I can't reproduce it, I can't fix it.

As it turns out this is an important piece of the puzzle. On Server 2003 (Standard R2, in my case) I get this same error. I will investigate.

Dont know if this really matters or not, but i found some more mirrors
http://www.filemirrors.com/search.src?f ... =874393513
Now i would test this out myself and see if i get the same problem, but im running XP and you said the problem only occurs with Windows 2003, i do have 2003 enterprise r2 though, but i have barely any free space left on my HD, so i cant install 2003 on a seperate partition :x
