Sandboxie USUALLY Does Not Delete Contents Upon Close

Post by mzinkan » Thu Nov 01, 2012 12:53 pm

Hi,

I am running Win7 Ultimate 64-bit with Sandboxie 3.74 (64-bit). The problem I experience is that MOST of the time, Sandboxie does not delete its contents upon closing if IE9, but SOMETIMES it does. This has happened for at least the last three versions (3.66, 3.72, 3.74), ever since switching to a new laptop. I get tired of manually deleting the files by right-clicking the icon and choosing Delete Contents. I searched the Forum, but did not see my particular problem.

Also, sometimes I am unable to delete the contents and get the standard Error message that something has a file open. That's not my main concern.
Thanks in advance!

Mike

IE 9 needs about 20 or 30 seconds to shut down. The sandbox won't delete before all programs in the sandbox stop. So could it be that you're not waiting long enough for all programs in the sandbox to stop?

This is the way I end my sandbox session.
Right-click on the tray icon and terminate all programs.
Quick and easy :D.

Hi Tzuk,
I wish that was it, but it's not. I ended a session at least 20 minutes ago, and when I came back, Sandboxie still had not deleted the files, so I deleted them and started a new session.

I don't have the same problem, but I did recently have a sandbox that had been renamed but wasn't deleted. Even after several other sandboxes were auto-deleted, that one remained.
Unlocker didn't find any locks, and Explorer had no problem deleting it.

mzinkan did you see red dots in the Sandboxie tray icon during those 20 minutes or did it go back to the solid yellow look with no red dots?

Also, do you have automatic deletion configured in Sandbox Settings > Delete > Delete Invocation?

Tzuk,
Yes, there are always red dots and the red dots stay there when it doesn't delete.
Yes, I have the Delete invocation setting checked.

The automatic deletion is triggered only when the red dots disappear, so the problem is not with automatic deletion per se, the problem is that you have a program or programs in the sandbox which never stop.

The next time this happens, please double click on the Sandboxie icon in your tray area, to open the Sandboxie Control window, and you should see a list of programs that are running at that time. You can ignore programs that start with a Sandboxie prefix (like SandboxieRpcSs), but please tell me which other programs you see.

Ultimately the point is to determine programs that should be ended, and then right-click on this program in the Sandboxie Control window, select Program Settings, then select the checkbox "Stop this program if it lingers in the sandbox after other programs have ended."

Sandboxie USUALLY Does Not Delete Contents Upon Close

Hi Tzuk,
The only non-Sandboxie file still running was DNTPService.exe, part of Albine's Do Not Track Plus. I've followed your directions and will assume that this problem is solved.
Thanks!

Sandboxie USUALLY Does Not Delete Contents Upon Close

Hi Tzuk,
Well, DNTPService.exe is ticked for Sandboxie to close it if it lingers, but it still doesn't get closed and Sandboxie still has the red dots. This still happens after a reboot.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Mike

Sandboxie stops linger-type programs only when there are no non-linger programs in the sandbox.

So my question is are you sure DNTPService.exe is the only thing running in the sandbox at the time this happens? Would appreciate if you could quote the list of programs still running in the sandbox so I can take a look.

Hi Tzuk,
Here's what's showing:
SandboxieRpcSs.exe - 5228
SandboxieDcomLaunch.exe - 5500
DNTPService.exe - 7768
SandboxieCrypto.exe - 2772
That's all. I'd add a screenprint, but not sure how attach it.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Is it possible that your DNTPService.exe program is showing some visible windows?
The linger process mechanism will not stop programs that are showing windows.

Let's try an alternate approach where instead of relying on the linger process mechanism to stop DNTPService.exe, we instead don't allow this program to run in the sandbox.

Go to Sandbox Settings > Restrictions > Start/Run Access
Click Add Program, type iexplore.exe into the window that opens, and click OK all the way back.

If you now get a warning from Sandboxie about DNTPService.exe blocked from starting in the sandbox, just hide the message so it doesn't bother you.

Hi Tzuk,
DNTPService never showed any visible open windows.
I tried your suggestion, but never got the SBIE about that particular service, so I was leery about setting anything to "hide." I decided to disable that service and return Sandboxie to normal status. Too bad that Albine's Do Not Track Plus doesn't work with Sandboxie, but no problems with SB since disabling it, so far.
Thanks for your help.

I am sorry to hear that you had to disable this other program to keep using Sandboxie. I am making a note to try this program Do Not Track Plus and see if I can resolve the problem with some Software Compatibility settings. But please note that it will take at least a few weeks before I can look into this.

I assume this is the web site.
