That would be the basic idea, yes.

Installation problem

Post by Screemer » Mon Apr 27, 2009 9:49 am

Hello, I live the idea of a truly portable sandboxie.
However, when I try to install the 2.3.0.4 from this site, I get that I have to close all other portable sandboxies before I upgrade?
I've never had it installed before.

I then tried to use the updater to upgrade to latest released version and the update part works but when launching the installer I get the same error as with 2.3.0.4

I am running on a Vista business x86 environment.

Any suggestion to what could be wrong?

I'm guessing you already have a local version of Sandboxie installed and running. You cannot run the portable version with a locally installed version of SB.

Or you renamed the installer... don't do that. It checks for a running "SandboxiePortable.exe". So if you renamed the installer, it will detect itself and abort.

Thank you for the really quick reply..
You were right in your assumption that I did rename the sandboxieportable.exe
Changed name and now it works flawlessly, thanks allot for a great way to use software in a portable way.

Perhaps changing that value then stopping / restarting the service would work, but I have an agreement with tzuk to distribute this portable version, and part of that agreement is that I stick with the official installer and supported installer options.

Yes, that is the solution (as described earlier in this thread). I just haven't implemented it yet.

Firstly, thanks for devising and maintaining this useful addition to Sandboxie.

A long time ago,
wraithdu wrote:Yes. Should be C:\Sandbox\%USER%\%SANDBOX% though. Either way, that's fine.

Point is, during the removal the Sandbox directory is removed. If you were to set it to drive C:\, you'd chance removing your whole drive. Well, you'd get errors but something would be bound to be lost. That's why I made the warning, and the launcher actually checks the path. If it's too short, 3 characters I think, it warns you you're being dumb ;)
Hi, I have this:

DeleteSandbox=1

in the file SandboxiePortable.ini, which is sitting alongside SandboxiePortable.exe in D:\SandboxiePortable\. When Sandboxie is running I can see the sandbox container folder is set to D:\Sandbox\%USER%\%SANDBOX% and Sandboxie works fine.

When I shut down Sandboxie, I get this message dialogue box:

Sandboxie Portable - 2.3.0.4
Unable to locate Sandbox

and the sandbox is left untouched after SandboxiePortable finishes.

If I instead set the container to be %LaunchDir%\DATA\Sandbox\%USER%\%SANDBOX%, I get:

Sandboxie Portable - 2.3.0.4
Unable to locate Sandbox in:
D:\Sandboxie\DATA\Sandbox\%USER%
(Perhaps a sandbox was never created.)

Not sure what might be going wrong. Any ideas?

cheers, Andy

Edit: Seems like having %USER% in there isn't supported by SandboxiePortable (despite that being used in the example from way back in this forum thread :-) ). The README.txt does seem to imply this, although it's a little confusing. Anyway, using %LaunchDir%\DATA\Sandbox\%SANDBOX% works just fine.

I suppose I misspoke there, or changed something after that. Anyway, from the current readme -
Except for the %SANDBOX% token which is automatically added to the
end of the 'FileRootPath' setting, there can be only one other token
in the path, it must exist at the beginning of the path, and it
cannot be a Sandboxie specific token such as %SID%.
So, SB specific tokens (%SID%, %USER%, %SESSION%) are not supported, and you can have only one other token at the beginning of the path. I may revise that last restriction at some point in the future.

Your path didn't work for one and both of those reasons.

Thanks

Hey, I just found this little portable utility - works great! Has Tzuk ever mentioned adding your contribution to the site directly?

It's already there under Contributed Utilities, linked from the download page.

is there also a default setting, maybe one that will read the OS's locale and set the language from there?

Not yet. I'll look into it when I have time.
