Sandboxie Install EXE won't delete off my desktop.

Post by PrincessMisery » Wed Aug 08, 2007 8:21 am

I've tried everything to try and get this icon off my desktop and it won't go away. It says the sandboxie install file is being used by another program. But it's not. I've checked my processes and closed everything that I could possibly close! I've even restarted and it does the same thing.

What happened was....

I was downloading sandboxie for the first time, then something happened and the file didn't download all the way. So I overwrote it with the new file being saved again when I retried it. I installed sandboxie just fine...but now what? The install file just won't go away!!!!! It's making me so mad. I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate. Please helpppp.

hmmmm ... doubt if it is something from sandboxie holding on to it - you could try:

1. choose exit from the menu from right click on the sandboxie icon in the task bar
2. rename the file
3. restart

You could try unlocker http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker

At the very least it could tell you what process has the file open.

Hi Steve, I was going to recco unlocker but wasn't sure on the
"Vista Ultimate" part of her situation. maybe a few easy tweaks before an install of an entire program.

Unlocker is a small program. It's worth trying, and might do the job, but I've had mixed results with it identifying the locking program.

I'm not familiar with Vista - does it have anything like a "safe" mode that can be run? Then try deleting the file.

My wife uses Ultimate and I swear that everything I try to do on that system gets all the way done and then says that so and so program cant start for some security reason - leaving a bunch of uninstalled or half installed stuff all over the place.

She also has icons on the desktop that wont go away - I finally just marked them as hidden and gleefully came back to my xp machine, lol

- but on a couple of her icons, renaming them worked

this site does list unlocker as a vista compatable product though, so it should be good to try;

http://forums.vnunet.com/thread.jspa?th ... 0&start=45

but this is from the Unlocker Home Page:

- How to make Unlocker work on Windows Vista? You need to deactivate UAC globally for the whole system or locally just for Unlocker. Globally, go to "Control Panel" then "User Accounts" then again "User Accounts" then "Turn User Account Control" and set it to Off, then restart your computer. Locally go to the Unlocker install directory (usually C:/Program Files/Unlocker), right-click Unlocker.exe, select Properties, and on the "Compatibility" tab, under "Priviledge Level" enable "Run this program as administrator". Click "allow" everytime you will get the UAC prompt to ask if you want to run Unlocker.-

so maybe try renaming it first lol

Maybe Vista users just need to Take Control.

Disclaimer: I don't have Vista, so I don't know how well it works.

Thanx Paul, I'll give this a try on my misses machine - I'll give you some input on Vista ( and everything is times 10 for "Ultimate").

Under the "disguise" of protecting you from spyware, microsoft is actually paranoid on piracy. EVERYTHING has to be "validated" - whether you see the validation process or not.

change or fix something somewhere and three days later something else wont go and it's an automatic shutdown situation. "System files have been changed this machine is shutting down" - or something to that effect.

and then the system holds everything, "protecting you", and hence icons on the desktop.

When the princess said that she overwrote the file ( rather than delete it and start anew), I knew she was in trouble.

Err, mitch, i dont know why you get all those problems, but i beta tested Vista from the first pre-beta, all the way to the last RC release (before RTM) and i didnt even get any of those problems, and those were betas, and to add more input, i just switched to Vista 3 days ago ( i promised myself i would switch to Vista the next time i had to format my pc, and 3 days ago i had to re-format, so now im on Vista), and i still havent come across any of the problems you've mentioned nor have i come across any other problems, in fact the only problem i've found is that i should've switched to Vista earlier instead of waiting so long.

P.s for the record, im on Vista Ultimate too....

You are one of the lucky ones I guess, I have no doubt that someone of the computer caliber such as yourself can format and fresh install "anything" and have it up and running top notch.

I don't think the system is very "forgiving" towards an average user tho.

ps, that product that Paul recco'd did in fact work - so maybe it's been an "ownership" thing all along, weird ... I thought I paid for it at the store. lol

well, you're right. But I appreciate the fact that a good product such as Sandboxie has come along and has an off-shoot site like this where not only does the owner regularly partake in the conversation, but others give good imput as well.

And it doesn't need to be strictly sandboxie related. I've learned a lot and my computer is running much better because of it. I've recco'd Sandboxie all over the place but that is really not such a good thing since everyone I know thinks I'm crazy. lol

forgot to say thanx paul - uh thanx paul - wonder how the princess made out?

no it shouldn't be moved to resolved - it was never identified as a Sandboxie issue. It could have been anything - it was just us helping out a princess in distress.
