Opera Bookmarks Yes, But No Bookmark Icons (only stars)

Post by Lode » Fri Dec 07, 2012 6:30 am

Opera 12.11
Sandboxie 3.74 (64 bits)
Windows 7 Home Premium

Opera registers the bookmarks I make fine while sandboxed, but instead of the icons of the websites -which appear during the bookmarking- after closing the browser and having Sandboxie automatically delete its content, the icon is gone and a default yellow star appears in its place. This does not happen while bookmarking unsandboxed: then the icons stay.

I like those little stars, but it's a bit easier to distinguish who's bookmarks they are when the respective distinct icons -and titles- show instead of a vertical row of all the same stars and those titles.

I have both "Allow direct access to Opera Bookmarks" and "Allow direct access to entire Opera profile folder" options ticked (+).

Obviously this is no biggie at all, and I can pleasantly live with it. If I really want I can always return to the site unsandboxed, delete the bookmark, and bookmark it again to this time keep the icon. I'm just in a whining mood...

It looks like the template for saving files to the entire Opera profile folder may not have a setting that will work for saving of the favicon files.

Look for Opera's "icons" folder in the Opera profile folder that's outside of the sandbox, so you know its location.
Then add a direct access setting for opera.exe, so it can save files to the "icons" sub-folder.

Outside of the sandbox:
XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\(user)\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera\icons

Vista/Win7 should be:
C:\Users\(user)\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera\icons

Sandbox Settings > Resource Access > File Access > Direct Access
"Add Program" button: opera.exe
"Add" button: Navigate to the "icons" folder. Select it.
OK your way out.

Tested on Opera 12.11

Thank you.

I have to admit that due to my limited pc knowledge, I don't know how to find "C:\Users\(user)\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera\icons".

I've tried by copy/pasting that -with my \(username)\- in the search bar in Start, but that doesn't work, nor if I let it do an advanced search in "Computer."

I never knew how to do this, and have so far not really needed to know. But I would like to now.

Looking for the "icons" folder meant to run Windows Explorer and use it to navigate through the folders and files on the hard disk.
Using the Sandbox Settings step, as I listed above, amounts to doing the same thing - but using Windows "Browse" windows to navigate thru the hard drive to the "icons" folder.

If you want to assume that your "icons" folder is in the default location, then a procedure that you can use is:

Sandbox Settings > Resource Access > File Access > Direct Access
"Add Program" button: opera.exe
"Edit/Add" button: %Local AppData%\Opera\Opera\icons\
OK your way out.

(note the <space> in: %Local AppData%, above)

Yes, those last instructions I could follow, and it worked. Thank you!
Trying it out, instead of one of the little stars I now have a little sandbox there directing to this page... :D

At first it didn't seem to work, but then I remembered the Sandboxie message saying that the change would not take effect while made sandboxed. (I had left that message showing enabled.) So after I closed the browser > opened it again > removed the bookmark > bookmarked it again> closed the browser > opened it again, and there it was. All this was done sandboxed as by default.

Due to some severe software error I had to reformat. And return here to see how to resolve the "only stars icons in Bookmarks" issue again, as I didn't remember exactly how to.

It has happened before after I got the above helpful answers that I had to return here for this. And I'm still grateful for the info.

I've just copied the simple instructions given above in a document I called "Sandboxie - Opera Bookmark Icons". And copied that on a memory disk.

Thanks again. :D

(I'm still utilizing Opera 12.16, the latest version released in Juli -3 months ago at the time of this writing- before the big change -Opera Next [15, 16, 17]- came along, which I don't like and most probably will never use [matter of taste]. If and when 12.16 would not work properly anymore someday, I'll see what will be available then in browser land to replace it with.)
