SBIE1242 Cannot remove Registry Hive

Post by martinru » Sun Apr 15, 2007 8:55 am

I installed Sandboxie on my Windows 2000 laptop yesterday and whilst its fairly intuitive (and brilliant), I'm still finding my way round it.

Naturally, I browse under a User account, but I notice that when I log in to my Administrator Account, after the startup programs have finished loading, I get the message "SBIE1242 Cannot remove registry hive...". It doesn't seem to cause any otner problems but clearly something isn't as happy as it should be.

I'd be grateful for any ideas or suggestions.

Thanks

Martin

When you get this message, start RegEdit and look below HKEY_USERS.

Do you see any keys that look like Sandbox_something_something ?

SBIE1242 Cannot remove Registry Hive

Hi Ronen,

Under normal circumstances there is indeed such a registry entry: Sandbox_Web Browser_DefaultBox containing 2 sub-keys (if that's the correct term): Machine and User. Now when I switch accounts either from the User to the Admin account or vice versa and look in the Registry, I see the Sandbox_Web Browser_DefaultBox key BUT IT'S TOTALLY EMPTY i.e. the sub keys Machine and User are not present. If now I open the browser in Sandboxie and then close it and again look in the Registry, the sub-keys Machine and User have now been generated.

So it's really not a big problem at all but I realise you may well want to get to the bottom of it. If you want me to do some further testing I'd be more than pleased to do so.

Many thanks

Martin

SBIE1242 Cannot remove Registry Hive

I've delved further. Using the program Startup Control Panel, I stopped the firewall, antivirus, antispyware etc from loading so that all I had in my systems tray was the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon and the Volume Control icon. Under these conditions everything worked perfectly: no error message and the Sandbox_WebBrowser_DefaultBox registry key, with its sub-keys, exists only when Sandboxie is in use and the key disappears as soon as Sandboxie is closed. And there was no problem switching between Accounts. So something that is loading up is interfering with Sandboxie. I will try and narrow it down and find out which program it is and report back.

OK. If you can narrow it down to exactly which application is causing the conflict, then I could try it myself.

Hi Ronen,

It's the Comodo Verification Engine that's causing the problem. This program verifies a website as genuine. I've stopped it loading and there's no problem. Strangely though it still works because it still verifies sites even though the icon no longer appears in the systems tray.

I had noticed something strange earlier: on starting my browser in Sandboxie, a second Comodo Verification Engine icon would appear in the systems tray and would stay there till I closed the sandboxed browser. Now, of course, no such icon appears in my systems tray at any time.

So problem solved and it's probably not worth your time looking into it further, especially given that I am running Windows 2000 and the offending program is probably one not many people use. Still, useful information for anyone coming across a similar glitch in the future.

Many thanks for your interest and for such a cracking little program.

Martin
