register file extentions for specific sandboxes

on my system i have a different sandbox for each program, acrobat, MS office, web browsing, and so on

to increase some userfriendlyness, could a settings file be created to default open certain file extensions with specific sandboxes ?

not asking to have files downloaded by the web browsing sandbox to be automaticaly launched into another sandbox

currently it's right click on the file/folder, select send to, select SandboxIE, select individual sandbox

could this be simplified to: windows opens the file with sandboxie, and sandboxie selects the sandbox that is to be used for a specific extension (that the user has set in settings (file or configuration preference)

with the pro version you can force applications automatically into a sandbox,
so if you force word and excel in your 'office' sandbox, that is kinda the behavior you want?

yes, i am familiar that sandboxIE can be set to force a program to run in the default sandbox. anytime programs that the user has stated are to run inside sandbox are launched they default to the default sandbox.

but what about file extentions for document types ?, txt, doc, avi, mpg, mp3, pdf, DVD movies, torrent files, ...

these currently (to the best of my knowledge) have to be manualy directed to the sandbox that has the programs to run them properly.

i have a bit torrent sandbox,

can a settings file or config settings be included so we man manualy assign extentions to be opened with particular sandboxes ?

*.mpg in the media player sandbox
*.mp3 in the itunes sandbox
*.pdf in the acrobat sandbox
(movie DVD's) in the PowerDVD sandbox
*.torrent in the bit torrent sandbox

windows can already specify that a particular extention defaults to being opened to sandbox, but sandbox itself cannot execute a document of any type, nore can it currently redirect the document to our prefered sandbox for that document type

I'm not saying that I've done much of it, but you force programs to run sandboxed - not extensions.
Then if Windows is set to associate a particular extension with a particular program, the associated program will start sandboxed - and will hopefully open the file you double-clicked.

So if winword.exe is forced to run in the MSWord sandbox, and you double-click a .doc file in a folder (not one of the sandbox folders), then you would expect Word to run in the MSWord sandbox.
Force wmplayer.exe to run sandboxed in the MediaPlayer sandbox, and double-click either a .avi or .mpg file to run MediaPlayer sandboxed - assuming those file types are associated with Media Player - and hopefully Media Player will run sandboxed in the MediaPlayer sandbox.

You may find that this approach doesn't always work well with Microsoft programs though, because of the way they are integrated into Windows.
It works more reliably with 3rd party programs.

yup, that works for programs that are installed directly into windows and are run in sandboxIE

for programs that are installed into sandboxIE and are not installed directly into windows, ... that would not work

there are a lot of programs that are nice to have, but installing them directly into windows makes the whole system unstable afterwards

Not that I know of, which is why I restore a dummy sandbox, in which I've configured my chosen associations. But it does sound like a good feature request.

You might try the following method.

To open pdf's into a sandbox-installed pdf reader: Using an unsandboxed file explorer, find an unsandboxed pdf file. Right-click the pdf for its context menu and click "open with..." and then "choose default program." Make sure the checkbox to "Always use the selected program..." is checked, and then "Browse" right down into the relevant sandbox-folder and select the pdf reader's executable. Windows will now associate and open double-clicked pdf's into that reader...and since sandbox-folders are treated as forced-folders, the pdf's will be opened sandboxed.

Should work okay. Holler, if not.

it's a so-so request now

i guess all that would change if sandboxie was to control what sandboxes where used is in windows i link all file extentions to sandbox. and now i link them to the specific app instead.

simplifies icons as well

obviously a simple fix to replace extra coding
