For my own personal use I trialled four programs that use virtualization techniques: (censored), DefenseWall, GreenBorder, and Sandboxie. DefenseWall crashed on my PC and GreenBorder corrupted the internet shortcuts in my Favorites folder. (censored) worked, but I found it to be a little confusing and poorly documented. Sandboxie, on the other hand, works flawlessly on my PC without any noticeable performance impact on browsing speed when running IE7 inside the sandbox.
One of the things I particularly like about Sandboxie is that, instead of hiding the use of virtualization to protect system resources behind the scenes, with Sandboxie virtualization is implemented explicitly using the sandbox concept. This is a very flexible and powerful approach, which is easy to understand and leaves the user in complete control. To get the best out of the program though I had to edit the configuration file to customize the settings to my own requirements, so Sandboxie may be best suited to users who are comfortable with editing .ini files.
As others have pointed out, although Sandboxie is an excellent security program, it should not be viewed as a replacement for other security software - e.g. firewall, antivirus, antispyware, HIPS, etc. - but should be used alongside other security programs as part of a multi-layered defense against malware. I strongly recommend that anybody interested in using virtualization to beef up their defenses give Sandboxie a try, and if found to be of use then pay to register the program in order to encourage its further development.
Finally, I would like to say thank you to Ronen for producing such an excellent and well crafted program.
Sandboxie is an excellent security program
