Suspend Sandbox

Post by WBM » Thu May 13, 2010 11:04 am

Hi -
There are times where I would like to temporarily suspend the application of a Sandbox to make permanent adjustments to the application configuration. For example, if I have a Sandbox for Excel that forces Excel to sandbox (to avoid problems with malicious workbooks) and want to permanently change a setting (i.e. alter macro security settings), I have one of two options (of which I am aware):
  • go into the configuration of the Sandbox and de-list the excel application from the forced program listing, run the program to make the change, then re-edit the sandbox configuration or
make a chage while sandboxed and search through the modified configuration files to restore the appropriate file (cannot do with registry keys)
Can we add an option to the context menu for a sandbox to disable/ suspend the sandbox? This would provide a simple way to run a program to make a change and re-sandbox. It may also make sense to add a quick warning modal to confirm that the user wants to disable the sandbox and relate the security implications-- as well as the option to not ask every time for more experienced users.

Thanks for the great product!

Possibilities:
1) Set the Disable Forced Programs time to a long time, under Sandboxie's File > Disable Forced Programs.
Say, 360 seconds. After that you can right-click the tray icon and Disable Forced Programs, whenever desired.
When you want forces re-enabled, right-click the Sandboxie tray icon and left-click on Disable Forced Programs.

2) Create a special shortcut that will run the program unforced, using a combination of the Sandboxie start.exe program and the command line switch /disable_force
Example, using Thunderbird:
"C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\Start.exe" /disable_force "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe"

3) Update to Sandboxie v3.45.10 or later. Right-click a shortcut for the program, choose Run Sandboxed, and then click on Run Outside Sandbox.

Or right-click on the program's shortcut and hold down the Ctrl-Shift keys while clicking on Run Sandboxed.

Thanks - The Ctrl+Shift+"Run Sandbox" option works well. Just a couple follow-up items:
  • 1) Is there a central location for documented Sandboxie shortcuts such as the one noted? (I searched on the forum/ FAQ quickly, but nothing jumped out)
    2) I'm running version 3.442 and attempted to check for newer versions via Help -> Check for Updates, but the program does not find newer versions. Has v3.45.10 been "officially" released? (I have downloaded the linked version in the thread referenced)
Thanks again!

No, because there aren't many (yet).

No, it's a beta version and won't be found that way.
