Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore

Re: Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore
not sure if its been mentioned, but if i open firefox through
Sandbox > (my firefox box) > run sandboxed > run web browser
it'll open every time. (as firefox is my default browser)
i'm on Win 8.1-64, using norton version 22.5.4.24 and sandboxie 5.06
also, if i follow curts instructions EXACTLY, and disable the firefox cleanup settings, i can open a FF window using the regular icon.
however, it only works for the 1st FF window i open. if i close that window and try to open a new one, it hangs.

Dear Forum Members
I believe that this has drifted off the main reason for it coming into existence, i.e. the problem of sandboxing Firefox caused by a NAV/NIS update on 19th October. And at the moment, there is no known solution other than removing NAV/NIS and it's associated files from your PC (or Tablet).
However, my main bone of contention is how destructive some Symantec updates can be, it seems like these updates deliberately target other non-Symantec protective applications, let me relay the problems:-
An update, released in July, which upgraded NIS from 21.x to 22.5x did the following
a) Deleted four non-Norton utilities, two of which were protective apps.
b) Tried to remove the connective software that allows my PC to communicate with my NAS.
c) Damaged the "Temp File Deletion" facility in Norton Utility 16, this facility can no longer delete temp files, stop counting the non-deletion of temp files or complete it's now non-existent function (i.e. stop and pass on to the next function/facility in the NU list).
And what makes this worse is that while Symantec/Norton have gone on to repair NAV/NIS after this debacle but they have not fixed or updated Norton Utility 16 yet.
My next problem, as known to all thread readers, is the nonsense with another Norton update crippling the ability of Sandboxie to open Firefox, another couple of non-Norton protective applications.
For me, there is no such thing has having too much protection on your PC and so I am so pi??ed off with Norton mainly attacking non-Norton protective applications, it is quite obvious that for whatever reason Symantec/Norton is now releasing under-tested and potentially destructive updates and this for me is totally unacceptable.
Admittedly, NAV/NIS seem to offer the best all round protection, much better than other AVs out there, but this attack on other products have me wondering whether I should move onto another Internet Security product.

Dear Forum Members
I've just installed Microsoft Security Essential, the latest version available for XP, and this is what I intend to use until Norton has sorted out the latest problem created with it's NAV/NIS update.

There is a posting over in Mozilla about 360, This may be worth a shot if you haven't tried it...ukbobboy wrote:Dear Forum Members

Norton 360, click "Settings," choose "Firewall," and then select "Rules." If Firefox is in the list, click it and select "Remove." Click "Add," navigate to the location of Firefox on your computer -- usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox -- and select "firefox.exe." Choose "Allow" when the prompt asks you what you want to do with this program.
Re: Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore
UK Bob et al,
For what ever reason I'm not experiencing this Firefox issue.
I run Norton Security v22.5.4.24 + SBIE 5.06 + FF 41.0.2
I know v22.x (including v21.x legacy Norton that morphed into v22.x when Norton folded v22 enhancements and features into v21) has had numerous issues since v22.x release.
If anyone feels v22 is causal to this Firefox issue. Be happy to share my SBIE/FF/Norton setup.
If my W8.1 machine bumps an issue like this. I'll run Webroot as I know SBIE plays with Webroot.
If I had W10. I'd run Defender w Windows FW unless dissuaded away.
Good luck

Re: Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore
What's odd about Norton Security is how flaky it is. One minute its ok, the next...FF won't load. Curt was able to recreate it fairly routinely yesterday, but with no exact cause determined. I personally use Norton 360 (as provided by Xfinity/Comcast) and have no problems (with similar builds and patches) as tested on a Win 7, 10 a Win 10 Tablet (as well as a MacPro running Win 10 in parallels) and SBIE and FF are a happy couplebjm wrote:UK Bob et al,

So, for now, we've put Norton Security on the not-supported list (as it is currently) but older Norton products, etc. may just be fine (Symantec Endpoint works just fine also)
Also, if you have an A/V you would like me to test, post a response over at the topic below and I will do my best...

Re: Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore
Sounds like a plan. On occasion, I'll have a forced FF false start. So, something is occasionally "flaky". Not a deal breaker, yet.Craig@Invincea wrote: What's odd about Norton Security is how flaky it is. One minute its ok, the next...FF won't load.

Re: Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore
We'd rather is just break and reflect something in Procmon....anything. It just hangs. For no reason. That's the frustrating part for Curt.
Re: Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore
Naturally, since I posted "forced FF false start". I haven't had any. Go figure.Craig@Invincea wrote:We'd rather is just break and reflect something in Procmon....anything. It just hangs. For no reason. That's the frustrating part for Curt.
Maybe excluding C:\Program Files\Sandboxie helped. IDK
Thanks

I previously tried adding that line to my Norton AV and FF would load one time sandboxed and than never again during sessionbjm wrote:Maybe excluding C:\Program Files\Sandboxie helped. IDK

FWIW I also tried c:\sandbox which equally did no good.MDrew wrote:I previously tried adding that line to my Norton AV and FF would load one time sandboxed and than never again during sessionbjm wrote:Maybe excluding C:\Program Files\Sandboxie helped. IDK
Re: Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore
Okay Forum,
I reinstalled SBIE 3.72 (from the beginning of time) and it works fine (FF+SBIE+Norton AV). I tried 402 and it didn't work so between there and that sometime - I don't know - but since I am on XP - the world is bright here

Re: Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore
Happy news for Norton & Win 8.1-users: It seems, that sandboxed FF is running since latest Norton-updates.
I have nothing changed besides the actual virus live updates of october 30.
Using:
Windows 8.1 (64bit)
Norton Security Online Backup vers. 22.5.4.24
Sandboxie (64bit) 5.06
Firefox 41.0.2
I hope it is running stable now
Would be nice, if other affected users report their experiences.
BTW: The problems on XP still remain.

Unfortunately (at least until now) the problem remains here too with Windows 7. I just made a manual live update but no change of the situation.richard329 wrote:Happy news for Norton & Win 8.1-users: It seems, that sandboxed FF is running since latest Norton-updates.

What I can confirm are MDrew's experiences with two older versions of SBIE:

Re: Sandboxie cannot open (a sandboxed) Firefox anymore
Hello. I am having a problem and cannot find a solution in your forums
On one machine I have no problems. On the other, Sandboxie does not run consistently.
Sometimes it does not run, but then with a reboot it does run. In both cases, I start Sanboxie (or try to) as soon as the program loads.
I have purchased 3 machine licenses for Sandboxie. I am running Windows 7 64 bit on both machines.
Sandboxie version is 4.20 64 bit.
I run Firefox 41.02 on both machines. Other than that, I am not using any of the conflicting programs listed on the Sandboxie web site.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes on both machines
Fwiw I just downloaded Sandboxie fresh from the Sandboxie web site in case there was a problem there. Trying that did not help. Can’t say what the version number is, since it won’t run on this machine.
When I try to run Sandboxie Control on the machine where Sandboxie does not run,
I get the following two message boxes in sequence:
Unknown user, configuration settings will not be saved
And
Failed to record configuration setting SbieCtrl_UserName in section Unknown: C0000080
I uninstalled and reinstalled Sandboxie. The above repeats
I run License.exe and get a message that my license was not accepted, for unknown reasons. Working with SbieCtrl.exe, I don't get the control to start up but get the following error
messages
What can I do to get Sandboxie to work on this machine?
Thank you
Ron Lesser
