Sandboxie-Engine for running programs on USB-Stick

Hi there,

here comes a request, not for a feature but more for an software wich uses the same base.

I searched a while for a simple sandbox where i can install programs on, but wich is completely system-independent (not os independent)

the best would be if all the fish is in one single file (so the whole virtual filesystem and all the data)

so u can put it onto an usb-stick and run it from there
all the silly pay-ware would be dead and it would be sooo simple

in my mind is something like an wirtual desktop with its own window on the real desktop and all the apps are encapsulated within
ant when u put the usb-stick into u pc and autorun is active the window with ur very personal desctop pops up and u r free 2 work completely independent from the software on the host pc

Besides the requirement to make sure all Sandboxie settings are written to file (this may already be the case), handling this suggestion could be done rather simply by making a checkbox, "Run in open mode." When enabled, Sandboxie would work exactly the same except that write operations would be permitted to write to disk if the file did not exist within the Sandbox. Thus, new files from the disk would never be added to the sandbox while in open mode. Such a mode would not protect from Spyware and whatnot and a scary warning could pop up when turning it on (and a scary warning could display when starting SandBoxie in open mode, or you could just change the program's display icon).

Then, users would run program install files from Sandboxie in closed mode to install programs into the sandbox, after which point the users would run Sandboxie in open mode to use the installed programs (after running it once in closed mode to make sure Sandboxie captured any errant preference files created upon first running the program).

I do think this is a good thing to offer and it should be relatively easy to implement. However, it would potentially cause you to get a new batch of users with different interests.

The software would have to be indipended from the Hardware... which IS often the case, but not always...

This approach was also discussed for full Virtual machines. They have the same problem you would have: The VM or Sandboxie would have to isntall kerneldrivers.
Virtualisation without is not (yet?) possible.

so how about "emulating" a windows system (copy the most important parts of the system, wich are software dependent, to the sandbox on the stick) and then run an emulated vm or sandbox by combining the filez on the stick and the files wich are on every windows system. in this vm u can install and use software completely independent by writing any userdata to the stick and so on ...

i have the feeling of repeating myself

plus:

i think its no problem when cant install any software wich is not hardwareindependent

it would be a little price for a such a feature

the mainly used hardware coul be emulated by the sandbox and the signals woul only reached through when the hardware is realy there (sound or so)

Too many suggestions, none of them simple.

How about this: Install Microsoft Virtual PC, and use Shared Folders if you want the guest system to modify the host system.
