Cisco WebEx file sharing fails

Post by RedBonnet » Tue Dec 08, 2015 4:26 pm

Windows 7 64bit
Sandboxie 5.06
Firefox 42
Microsoft Office 2013

2 issues occur when trying to install and use Cisco's WebEx meeting software from within the sandbox. Outside the sandbox, these issues do not occur.

Issue 1) Trying to share any PowerPoint file (even a blank single-slide file) fails silently.
To replicate the issue, try to join a WebEx meeting by going to >> https://meetings.webex.com/collabs/#/me ... 4698.16533 <<
1.1) Enter any name, and make up an email address.
1.2) From within the sandbox, install the WebEx software when prompted
1.3) The software will run automatically. From the menu bar, select Share >> File >> From My Computer and pick any Powerpoint 2013 file (.pptx)

The file will appear to load but get stuck about 90% of the way through. Note that POWERPNT.EXE is started in the background. I need help figuring out why things are not working, and how to configure Sanboxie to make them work.

Issue 2) Trying to share any non-Powerpoint file fails with error: "Your Windows user profile currently lets you share only Microsoft PowerPoint presentations"
To replicate, follow the same steps as above but try to share a PDF or word document or even a TXT document instead. This 2nd issue seems related to printer drivers. Among the known issues (https://help.webex.com/docs/DOC-2012), under the "File Sharing" header, it's written: "If you are a host using Windows and do not have a universal printer driver installed on your system, you will not be able to share any file types except Microsoft PowerPoint files"

Please help

Print drivers (any driver) cannot be installed directly in SBIE.

SBIE will use what driver is installed on the host. So, if you need a particular driver, it needs to be on your host.

Office 2013 is a click to run program that is currently not supported in SBIE. This is why it will not load within a sandbox environment if Office 2013 is attempting to run/open a file while sandboxed. If it was pre-2013 (such as Office 2010) It would be a different story.

Thanks for the response. Does what you say apply to both of the issues I've highlighted?

Users have reported some success with webex in the past. There has been issues with camera drivers, etc. but your issue seems to cover 2 problems related to SBIe that WebEx is currently using (driver and office 2013). (Not directly WebEx per se)

So, if a program needs a certain driver in place, that would have to be Installed on the machine. For some reason SBIE cannot "see" that driver (that's rare) then it would have to be located and given direct access to SBiE.

As for Office 2013 or newer (and 365) that is not supported. If an office 2013 program is opened while attempting to be sandboxed, it will hang and or crash the office program.

Pre 2013 is supported, as MS at that time didn't fully implement Click To run.
