Problem opening mht-files on 4.01.xx

Post by mumdigau » Wed May 15, 2013 5:05 pm

After upgrading from 3.76 to 4.01.xx doubleclicking a mht-file Windows comes up with an error message ("...mht could not be opened...") which has to be clicked away, but nevertheless the mht-file is opened in IE (forced program). There is no error message if a mht-file is opened via the file menu of IE, or if the file is opened outside the sandbox. I cleared the contents of the sandbox, but that didn't help. I deleted the sandbox, and created a new one, no vail.

This only happens on my Windows XP system (WinXP Pro SP3 32-bit, IE8). Everything works fine on my Win64 Ultimate 64-bit, also with IE8.

I went back to 3.76, and everything is OK again.

Any idea what is wrong here?

Confirmed on XP with IE 6.

tzuk, it looks like this is related to the "Links from outside the sandbox" thing that doesn't work in 4.01. :)

It's the same "Windows cannot find ..." message I see when typing a URL into the Run box, taskbar Address Bar, etc. (IE default browser, if that matters), except in those cases the browser opens but stays blank.

I looked into this, looks like the same problem as here:

http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=15558

I think Windows Explorer first tries DDE, and it fails, so Explorer issues a warning/error,
then it retries with a secondary approach.

I say this because if I configure MHT files to not use DDE, I no longer get that warning/error message box.

On XP you may be able to turn off DDE by going into any Windows Explorer folder view window -> Tools menu -> Folder Options ->
File Types tab -> find MHT -> click Advanced button near bottom of Folder Options window ->
Edit File Type window appears -> select "open" in list of "actions" -> click Edit button ->
turn off checkbox "use DDE" and OK all the way back.

Is the problem with links from outside the sandbox not working also DDE-related...?

External links seem to work for me. I created a shortcut on the Windows XP desktop to google.com and double clicking it opens the forced iexplore.exe on Google.

There was a time when this didn't work but I fixed it in version 4.01.05:

Have you had a chance to test this again since then?

.url shortcuts are too simple ;), and I never saw a problem with them, even when I first reported (I used Favorites from XP Start Menu). As I said:

From the quoted other topic link, check UNsandboxed OE's Help menu stuff, Automatic Updates' "More information ..." links, etc. I'm thinking all these things might be using DDE too...

Yeah, it looks like DDE -- you can see the new iexplore.exe process is starting without giving it a URL in the command line.

@tzuk
I can confirm that. The error message is gone. Thanks
