Can't Install Sandboxed

Post by TerryWood » Tue Jul 17, 2007 7:48 am

I am using Sandboxie 3 (a fairly long term Sandboxie user) and have noticed that on occasions some software will not install in a Sandbox. I am not sure but I think this applied to v2.86 as well.

As one example, yesterday I downloaded Foxmail 6 beta 5. On install it stopped part way through (Like a freeze) despite numerous tries I could not get it to install. I even uninstalled Sandboxie and reinstalled it, but no joy.

In the past I have put it down to bad downloads. On this occasion I redownloaded Foxmail. Again no joy.

I decided then to install Returnil (A virtualisation program similar to PowerShadow) on my system (for reasons unconnected with the sandboxie problem) because I heard good reports about it and it works well with Sandboxie.

As an afterthought I decided to try installing Foxmail in Returnil.

Low and behold a perfect install, not just once but several times. I then returned to Sandboxie, deactivated Returnil, tried to install Foxmail Sandboxed. No joy.

Has anyone else had problems with installing under Sandboxie?

Thanks

Terry

I tried installing Foxmail and finished installing with no problem. But then when it started to run, it would go into a loop creating more and more windows. I left it at that. There is some problem with Foxmail, but not in the installation itself, as far as I can see.

Cannot Install Sandboxed

I think your reply more or less is my experience.

What I forgot to mention is that when you bring up task manager to get rid of the freeze, under applications there was a whole list of:

.............Sandboxie "password"
.............Sandboxie "password"
And so on

I think this might be what you are referring to as the "loop".

I am happy to accept your explanation and thanks for your reply.

I am puzzled though why I have had this problem before, not often but there nonetheless, also why it worked flawlessly under Returnil!

Thanks Tzuk

Alright, go ahead and list here any progams that you find Sandboxie can't install, and I'll look into it when I have more time.

Can't Install Sandboxed

Post by TerryWood » Wed Jul 18, 2007 7:58 pm

Tzuk

Thanks for your reply.

I uninstalled Sandboxie v3 and reinstalled v2.86.

Then I tried to install sandboxed, Ice Mirror and Foxmail 6 beta 5.

BOTH INSTALLED WITH NO PROBLEM.

Then I uninstalled v 2.86 and reinstalled sandboxie v3.

Then tried to install IceMirror and Foxmail. Same problem as before. One of which you have experienced.

I do not think there is a need for me to look for other software that will not install. I think there is a problem with version 3 which you say you will sort in due course.

For the time being I will stay with version 2.86.

Grateful you post when this is resolved.

Hope this helps

Yep. I'm slowly working my way through all the bug reports here...

Sorry version 3 is causing more problems, but some (small part) of the security in version 2.86 is "compromisey" and had to be improved. The same principle was true for version 2.80 when compared to vesion 2.64, and eventually we got to version 2.86 where everything was just as good or better than 2.64, but with stronger security.

So I'm optimistic.

I tried Ice Mirror with Sandboxie version 3.00.05, and it installs fine. So that's one less problem I think.

Can't Install Sandboxed

Post by TerryWood » Sun Jul 22, 2007 3:58 pm

Hi Tzuk thanks for calling back.

I now have v 3.00.05 installed, tried installing IceMirror (Sandboxed) and encountered exactly the same problem as before. " Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close...."

Also as a matter of interest if you install widgets in Opera ( A kind of add in which is only available in Opera when its open. So when its closed and then reopened you have to load it it again from the Opera widget management console.) it works fine (When it is non sandboxed). When you open Opera sandboxed and load in the widget you get the same message as above "Windows has experienced a problem and needs to close..."

As a further aside I can also confirm the slow down in IE 7s performance.

I would also suggest that Firefox (my primary browser) is slower by a fair margin.

This latter comment is subjective because I have no actual or verifiable data to support my comment. It is apparent. Nonetheless in my view substantive.

Let's do one thing at a time.

The Ice Mirror problem. Can you provide more details? The full text of the error message would be a good start. As for my experience with it, I got so far as to finish the installation and get the main window for the program, but I didn't go any further than that.

Aha! As soon as I turned on DEP (and restarted for it to take effect), I got the same crash. I will check why Sandboxie conflicts with DEP.

This conflict is probably non-resolvable, unless the DEP mechanism is turned off.

However, you can configure Windows to exclude DEP for specific applications. Then Windows will suggest to turn off DEP for an application that failed due to DEP restrictions:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.

Click the Advanced tab. Then, under Performance, click Settings.

Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.

Click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select to select the OptOut policy.

If you selected the OptOut policy, click Add and add the applications that you do not want to use DEP with.

Or you can select:

Click Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only to select the OptIn policy.

This will apply a reduced form of DEP, which only protects the core of Windows, but not any applications. This is sufficient in many cases, because there is little point to use DEP to prevent an application from attacking itself.

Can't Install Sandboxed

Post by TerryWood » Mon Jul 23, 2007 8:32 am

Hi Tzuk

Thanks for your reply.

Couple of questions.

1) Is turning off Data Protection a serious issue or not? ie Does it remove any meaningfull defence that I might need?

2) You recall in this thread I reported a similar problem with Foxmail 6 beta 5 which you said was a problem with Foxmail. However I think you slightly backtracked on that.

Question, Is the Foxmail problem related to this Data protection or is it a different problem. If the latter will there be a solution?

Thanks

Terry

The only thing that DEP does is annoys you, it doesnt "protect" anything and i still have yet to see someone say there pc has actually been "saved" by DEP, anyways, instead of adding exclusions and whatnot, why not just turn off DEP completely, thats what i did.
