Problem Downloading PDF files.

Post by dogdog » Mon Dec 03, 2012 11:50 am

I am using 32bit Vista Ultimate with Sandboxie v 3.74

I am using Internet Explorer 9 and Adobe Reader X v 10.1.4

When I try to download PDF files using a sandboxed IE9 the download sometimes gets stuck (but not always).

eg: download Centrica Annual Report and Accounts PDF from http://www.centrica.co.uk/index.asp?pageid=447 works OK.

BUT

download Seagate Dashboard User Guide from http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/ex ... plus-desk/ gets stuck and does not download even though Adobe Progess bar shows download as finished. Sometimes the download seems to complete but then IE9 gets stuck (not responding) so I cannot do anything. When this happens another box shows in the task bar but with nothing in this task bar box.

Interestingly download Backup Plus Desktop Drive Data Sheet - also from http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/ex ... plus-desk/ works fine.

No problem with PDF download if IE9 opened unsandboxed.

In IE9 Add-Ons the Adobe PDF Link Helper is shown as enabled.
Adobe Acrobat Reader is shown with "+" under Sandboxie Software Compatibility.

About 3 weeks ago I upgraded from Adobe Acrobat Reader v 9.5 to Adobe Reader X. I do not remember ever having this problem with Adobe Reader 9.5. Could the problem be connected with the change to Adobe Reader X??

I created a brand new sandbox - left settings at default - the same behaviour was observed.

Any thoughts??

Many thanks.

PS Is it connected to this post: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopi ... obe+reader

Downloaded both without issue.

Went back to Adobe Reader v 9.5.2 - problem has gone.

There must be some kind of incompatibility between Sandboxie and Adobe Reader X v 10.1.4.

Please investigate.

Thanks.

You problem may be related the new release of Acrobat having its own built in sandboxing functionality called "Protected Mode".

Install Acrobat Reader X or XI,
- Start without sandboxing
- Menu Edit->Preference
- Select the "Security (Enhanced)" category
- Uncheck the "Enable Protected Mode at startup".
- OK
- Close Acrobat Reader

This solved the problem for me. It now works flawlessly while sandboxed.

Let me know if it helps.

Many thanks for your suggestion with Adobe Reader X (v 10.1.4) which I tried - Uncheck "Enable Protected Mode" and then restarted PC (Note that I had "Enable Protected Mode" rather than "Enable Protected Mode at startup")

I was able to download the troublesome PDF file - "Seagate Dashboard User Guide" from http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/ex ... plus-desk/
but IE9 gets stuck (not responding) so I could not do anything with PDF file - read it or save it - I tried several times. Therefore I have gone back to v Adobe Reader 9.5.2

What happens for you for this particular PDF download??

Perhaps tzuk could have a look to see whether he can reproduce the problem and, if so, build a solution into future Sandboxie release - compatibility with Adobe Reader is surely high on the priorities.

Many thanks. :) :)

@Blacky
I don't see any Menu option you mentioned when downloading Adobe Reader XI (again), which I did here (un-sandboxed and un-checking the Chrome option): http://get.adobe.com/nl/reader/

The only choices offered -during install- are the update modes.

I can download PDFs in Opera, Firefox, and IE9 un-sandboxed, but sandboxed I get a blank page, sometimes only the PDF bar in the middle, most part of it blank, and after a while this message appears:

Adobe PFF Document

There is a problem with Adobe/Acrobat Reader.

If it is running, please exit and try again. (103.103)

It's no biggie to me though, as I can always download PDFs un-sandboxed.

You can also use Foxit. It works great with SBIE. You can set it up to open the PDF in the browser or out of the browser sandboxed. Either way works great. I have set mine to open out of the browser in the browsing sandbox.

I guess you set Foxit up differently than I just did, because I still have the same thing happen as described.

It looks nice though. At first I did not see the option to change letter size in a PDF in Foxit, until I right-clicked on the document...

Lode, I ll tell you how I have mine setup. I don't have the Firefox plugin installed. In my Firefox sandbox, I allow Foxit to run with no internet access allowed. When I click on a PDF file in a webpage, I get a prompt to either save or open the file. Either saving or opening the file out of the browser works fine sandboxed for me (XP/W7 32bits).

I was trying to open a .pdf on my school website that normally opens just fine when it became stuck.

It asked me to download a missing plugin which happened to be Adobe XI. I use Sumatra and have been very happy with that so I was shocked to see that Sumatra was not able to open the school .pdfs when it opens other .pdfs just fine.

After downloading Adobe XI, the .pdfs do not open (get stuck) however when I use firefox without sandbox, Adobe XI is able to open the .pdfs perfectly.

I turned off the protection mode as recommended by Blacky but it did not remedy this issue.

In the mean time I am trying to figure out how to get my Sumatra (newest version) to open the .pdfs by default rather than require Adobe.

@bo.elam

My default browser is Opera, but I have Firefox also. I don't know which plugin you are referring to. Nor how to let Foxit run without Internet connection, or what that means in this case.

No problem though -as I said before- because I simply can copy the url of the pdf on my clipboard > close the browser > disable forced programs > open the browser > paste url > download pdf.

I meant no Foxit Firefox plugin installed. I have Foxit installed in the system but I don't have their plugin so when I click on a PDF file in a webpage and I select to open, the PDF does not display in the browser, it opens outside the browser. When you do it like that, Foxit opens in the Firefox sandbox if allowed to run, no need 'to allow Foxit to connect.

remove your in-browser pdf plugings

using them adds confusion - there is no download progress bar, memory usage - huge unwanted pdfs in background, unability to properly navigate and save your marks in pdf.

it makes your browser less secure (except you update your software every day) - old pdf viewers can be crashed using specially constructed pdfs' - just look at

use standalone program separated from web browser

I understand that one can make specific sandboxes for different programs. I've never done that yet, and don't really feel the need to.

I returned to Adobe Reader as I am more familiar with it's workings and seems therefore easier to me.
Besides that I have an Infix Pro license. (Which I'm not utilizing right now.)

Because I don't download PDFs too often, I will just do it un-sandboxed. No problem.

(I have Avira Premium, Emsisoft Security Pack -includes Online Armor- [3 years license, for $59 on eBay, the seller subtracted $5.99 for not sending me the needless CD], MBAM Pro. Hitman Pro (free), Panda Cloud Cleaner (free), Kaspersky Security Scan (free), even SpyShelter Premium. And if worst comes to worst I always have a system backup made within the last 10 days or less, saved on an external hard drive... even if my bootmgr would be shot [happened once] I can still start with a set of recovery CDs, and then use the backup.)

EDIT: Never mind. I tested in unsandboxed Iron Portable and it worked fine and then tried it Sandboxed and that works now as well, so something must have been messed up and needed a restart to fix it.

I'm having this problem in Sandboxie Iron Portable with Foxit.

In IE10 the PDFs download and display no problem but in Iron Portable, they just cause it to hang on that tab (mouse can no longer click on any of the links of the page that was displayed before I clicked the PDF link) and I have to close the tab, which sometimes takes a while.

In Iron (non-portable) they open sandboxed or not. I'll go and try Iron portable unsandboxed after I post this, just in case Adblocker or Flash Blocker could be causing problems.
