sbie2214 'service bits' and sandboxiedcomlaunch.exe
I am running SB 4.08 on Win 7 / 64 bit with drop rights
For the past few days I am getting a popup alert stating SBIE2214 Request to start service 'bits' denied due to dropped rights, SBIE2219 Request was issued by SandboxieDcomLaunch.exe (Default Box) and SBIE2220 to permit use of Administrator privileges , please double click on the message line.
Sofar I have ignored this and did not notice any issues, but I wonder why these alerts have just started. I did not change anything. I have tried to read up on the alerts but could not find anything specific relating to service 'bits'. Also the program requesting this being sandboxiedcomlaunch.exe is baffling me.
Can anyone please provide a bit guidance?

BITS is Background Intelligent Transfer Service. BITS is a COM object, so it is going to be intercepted by SandboxieDcomLaunch. Some app in the sandbox is trying to launch an update or something and no longer has any rights.

It's Chrome here. I started randomly seeing...
2014-02-25 00:32:11 SBIE2214 Request to start service 'bits' was denied due to dropped rights
2014-02-25 00:32:11 SBIE2219 Request was issued by program SandboxieDcomLaunch.exe [Web]
shortly after updating to and then using a sandboxed Chrome 33.0.1750.117 m last week. Windows 8.1 x64. Doesn't happen on Windows 7 x86. Have not tried 7 x64. Extensions: CsFire 2.0.7, HTTP Switchboard 0.8.2.0, New Tab Redirect! 2.2. Google autostarts and scheduled tasks disabled. Since nothing was breaking, I hid the messages.

Nick, yes I think you are spot on. I am using Chrome and this behaviour started after the last update (which btw happens for me with Chrome outside the sandbox automatically - creating a new chrome.exe, thus stopping chrome to work in one of my sandboxes with restrictions. I always manually delete the old chrome.exe, rename the new chrome.exe (ie remove the prefix new) and then things go back to normal. ).
Anyway, can you tell me how exactly you hide the message? If I click on the third option in the pop-up, overriding my drop the rights, will that only affect this specific instance or negate drop rights for everything?

To hide a message, click on the Hide box in the SBIE message. Overriding Drop rights would only apply to that particular sandbox.mouse wrote:Anyway, can you tell me how exactly you hide the message? I am also getting the same pop up with my email client (windows Live mail). It just started about a week ago and I also have not done anything new that i can think of.
Is ignoring the message by hiding the pop up Ok, as far as security goes? I don't want to drop rights in email.
Thanks
Dan

In my opinion, it is OK to hide the message that you are getting IF you are not seeing anything working incorrectly. Last December there was a SBIE message that people were getting when running IE9/10. The message was really meaningless and it was hidden by default when beta 4.07.05 came out. Perhaps this is one of those. But I don't know. In my personal case, I haven't seen the message in any of the many sandboxes that I use in either of my computers (XP/W7). But I don't use Live mail or Chrome and I run as an administrator in both of my computers.Dan_Br0673 wrote: Is ignoring the message by hiding the pop up Ok, as far as security goes? Dan, you should state if you are using W8.1, etc and what are the other security programs you are using. That kind of information might help Invincea figure out why you are getting the message.

Thanks, I am using Win 7 pro and IE 9 (thinking of upgrading to 11) I use Key Scrambler, and Microsoft security essentials. Only started seeing it in Live mail and not always, I just upgraded Sandboxie to 4.08 and I think I was using 4.06, so that might be part of it.bo.elam wrote:In my opinion, it is OK to hide the message that you are getting IF you are not seeing anything working incorrectly. These msgs are just Sandboxie telling you that something did not run because it requires elevated rights. So, there is no security lost by hiding these msgs. However, something in Live Mail (mail download? update? certificate check?) is unable to execute.

When an alert pops up, one of the options is "copy contents to clipboard"
what exactly am I copying? I was afraid to try that because it seems I would be letting something out of the sandbox

You ll be copying the body of the Sandboxie message if you click "copy contents to clipboard". I guess this option is available to make it easy to copy and paste the message here at the forum, in a text file, etc.Dan_Br0673 wrote:When an alert pops up, one of the options is "copy contents to clipboard"
