Virtual drives + Grant admin privileges inside the sandbox

Post by George » Thu Oct 04, 2012 4:41 am

Hi,

Is it possible to create a drive (e.g. Z:\) in the virtual file system that is not physically present on the host?

Is it possible to grant administrator privileges to a program in the sandbox without UAC coming up? After all, it runs in the sandbox, so there should be no harm, right?

Thanks.

Regards,
George

I'm afraid the answer to both questions is no. While a program in the sandbox doesn't need admin privileges to work correctly, some programs check if they have admin privileges. Sandboxie doesn't emulate security controls in Windows so you need UAC to provide the admin privileges.

Ok, thought so.

Virtual drives would be a great addition for a future version (we are using Sandboxie to emulate a file system of a remote host without needing a full-blown
virtual machine). Shouldn't be too hard to implement, I think. :)

Thanks Ronen.

On the other hand, you could use a Ramdisk program and have it mounted as a drive, before using it with sandboxed programs.
Or, use TrueCrypt and mount the volume as a drive. It will exist as a file, but it will be encrypted until mounted.
