Wordview.exe (there was a problem sending the...) win8.1

Post by PALDK » Fri Jan 22, 2016 3:18 am

Hi.
I'm very new to Sandboxie, bought it a couple a days ago, but so far I love this tool.

I'm in the process sandboxing the programs that can be at risk/vulnerable, and so far no big problems has turned up, except for wordview, if I sandbox "wordview.exe" or the whole folder, I can't open any .doc/.rtf files, when I try wordview show a blank screen and when I close it I get an error "there was a problem sending the command to the program".

I've tried many things, even moving the .doc/.rtf files to desktop, but still same error, there is no problem when wordview is not sandboxed.

Anyone have a solution to this?

I do not have MS office or any other office programs installed, just the wordviewer from MS.

Thanks in advance.

BTW.
Is there a list of programs that would be good to sandbox?

What version of Word / Office are you using? If It's Office 2013 (click to run) it will not work with SBIE at this time. (you can determine your version here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/librar ... 64733.aspx

If you are using Office 365, that is also not compatible with SBIE at this time.

List of known conflicts here http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?KnownConflicts

SBIE can be used with a wide variety of programs, but it's core function is sandboxing browsers, email clients and your downloads.

Hi, I do not use Office, it's only the std. wordview that comes with win8.

Ok, my fault. I saw Word..and assumed.

What happens when you right click on that document file and select Open Sandboxed? Are you using the latest version ? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... .aspx?id=4

Is the type of document you are trying to open using Wordviewer as the default program in Windows?

It is latest version, if I open the same files .doc/.rtf outside a sandbox, it all works just fine.

I've come to the conclusion, that it has to be some kind of windows security that get's confused by not having full access to something, so far I will just use it outside SB.

Thank you for trying to help, if I stumble over a solution, I'll post it here, could be other who ran into same problem ;)

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely.
P.Larsen

BTW.
I just sandbox those programs and folders that could be at risk, so far I'm very impressed, and feel a whole lot more secure :)

I do know you can use WordPad just fine to do what you need to do. You can also use other free Office suites if your don't want to deal with Microsoft. OpenOffice, Libre Office are known to work & open Doc, Docx and related MS files.

Hi.
Sorry for the late response.

Thank you for the help, for now I will use wordview outside sandbox, after all it's not that often I use it ;)

The more I learn about SB the more I wonder how I could live without it before :)

Have a great day.

@PALDK

Have tried opening Wordview sandboxed and then opening the document from within sandboxed Wordview? It will probably work then. I had the same thing with Softmaker Office. It probably has to do something with DynamicDataExchange (DDE).

That's a good point..and we suggest the users do just that. Open the program / viewer of that document format first, then open the document from within there.

Thanks for the tip, but I did try that too, same error, so far no luck, but I rarely use that viewer, so I won't use any more time on it, everything else I use seems to work nicely with sandboxie, not that I sandbox everything, only programs that could be a potential risk, like adobe viewer just to mention one.

Ohh, steambrowser too, works just fine, not steamclient and games, just the "steamwebhelper.exe"

Yet again, THANK you for this great tool.
