Unable to run any browser sandboxed.

Post by TonyG » Mon Jul 13, 2015 10:25 am

Am on XP 32 bit, as updated as it ever will be - Sp3.
Sandboxie 4.20

Firefox: 39.0
Chrome: Version 43.0.2357.132 m
Opera: 30.0

Behaviour: Throws up these error messages and nothing else happens.

Error messages:
SBIE2336 Error in GUI server: [63 / 00000008]
SBIE2336 Error in GUI server: [22 / 77000001]
SBIE2335 Initialization failed for process Start.exe [88 / 126]
SBIE2337 Failed to start program: [55 / 1067]
Process terminated unexpectedly 1067

I've tried: Uninstalling sandboxie including the config settings, re installing an older version (after re-booting).
Versions tried:4.20, 4.18, 4.10 - Hash confirmed each time.
Results: No change in behaviour or error messages - it's still not starting any of my browsers.

These particular SBIE numbers appear to not be listed on your errors list page.

Any ideas as to what I should try next?

ETA. It's not just the browsers, as of today I can't run any program sandboxed, not even notepad. Mighty strange.

Even right clicking on the SBIE icon and selecting "Run any Program" and then trying "notepad.exe" doesn't work?

I can get as far as clicking on "Run any program" and the same error message as in the first post appears.

I should add that I'm running Malwarebytes, but it's not kicking up any notifications in that prog..

Disable (or remove) Malwarebytes.

TonyG, if you were able to use Sandboxie without problems until recently, your issue could be due to your antivirus or another security program upgrading to a new version. Has Malwarebytes or any of the other security programs that you are using upgraded lately? What are the rest of security programs that you have in your computer?

I seem to receive spyware definition updates daily, more or less, but as far as I know no update that has changed my settings has occurred.

I'm trying it disabled now, and the same error message crops up. I'll try a re-install with Malwarebytes out of the equation.

Only Malwarebytes and Sandboxie are active, in terms of security. I have a couple of other scanning programs, but they are not active - or even installed.

With all security disabled (I don't even have Windows Firewall), and a fresh install of the latest version of Sandboxie (carefully checking the hash again) the error messages continue as before.

The 1st error is coming from a failed call to CreateDesktop. Error 8 = ERROR_NOT_ENOUGH_MEMORY. See the Remarks section on this page regarding desktop memory: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/librar ... s.85).aspx

Is there something unusual about your desktop? Do you have some application that is creating a new desktop or attempting to sandbox the desktop?

I'm none too familiar with registry keys, but I'm performing a search for it now to see if there's anything odd about memory allocations.

As far as I know there's nothing like you describe. The only sandboxing program I have is as described above, and no virtual machines or anything like it that seizes memory from a standard XP setup.

FYI. I've quad processors and 8 Gigs of actual memory, though XP 32 bit uses somewhat less.

ETA.> @Curt - OK, first search indicates that I have no key with that particular set of designations as per the link in your post, am broadening the search now, though I may have trouble interpreting the results.

ETA.> An in-file search of my entire hard drive for the incomplete designation "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" yealds six results - none of which have been modified since August 2012, and since Sandboxie was working yesterday, may I assume that that might be a dead end?

Of course, what I'm thinking now is that I should bow to the pressure of the marketplace and upgrade my operating system, especially since there seems to be no obvious fix for this. It's curious that more XP users have not reported this though, or indeed any others at all. Weird.

FYI. also, I've not installed or upgraded any software except Sandboxie a few days ago to the current version, and Firefox a few days before that to the version named in my original post. The last XP security update received was April 2014.

I have the same symptoms.

Try exiting from Skype first. That allows SB to work for me.

The problem I reported earlier regarding Flash is this same error. I was wrong then about Flash causing it. It was really Skype.

Skype 7.6.0.105
XP SP3 32 bit
SB 4.20 and 5.0.1 beta

Interesting if in fact Skype is causing some sort of issue. I'm waiting to see

Exited Skype, everything suddenly works fine. Conflict of some sort I guess, I'll wait for the experts to tell us what sort and how to deal with it, but for the moment I'm happy to drop Skype - I don't use it that much anyhow.

darist - thank you, unexpected solution for me, glad you also found yours. :)

Meanwhile I'll rename this thread to reflect the solution. No I won't, can't edit my first post! Mods or admins, please feel free.....

Excellent!

BTW, you probably can restart Skype after SB starts.

You're right, I can restart Skype after using Sandboxie. Not only that, but it seems I can empty the sandbox and then fill it again without issues as long as I initiate it the first time before initiating Skype. Neat.
