Firefox is freezing with Sticky Password

Post by henryg » Thu Feb 09, 2017 10:10 am

FF is freezing when using SP from time to time. It doesn't happen on all sites, and I can't pinpoint which sites it freezes on as I tend to have multiple tabs open at any one time, but I have a suspicion that it is for graphic UI heavy sites although having said that it froze here when writing this post (which is most unusual). Flash is set to require permission to run, which I rarely give, and protected mode is disabled.

I have tried SP with and without the SB compatibility mode, and it makes no difference I can discern. It has been happening for some time now, and it doesn't matter whether I use stable or betas of each program. I would guess it started first after SB 5.14. There are no problems when FF & SP are run together outside of a sandbox.

Once FF has frozen, if I kill the stpass.exe and spUIAManager.exe processes in SB, things return to normal; when it froze just now, I only had to kill spUIAManager and it unfroze.

What info can I give you to help sort this out?

WIndows 10 x64 v1607 b14393.726; SB 5.17.2; FF 52.0b4; SP 8.0.11.46 (stable)

Hello henryg,

UPDATE:
The template is causing a lot of problems for me, I am getting gui proxy errors, and buffer issues. So I had to disable it.
Without the template, so far, I have not experienced any problems.

---------------- X ----------------
I remember testing this issue in the past and not being able to reproduce it.
I will go ahead and re-test and see if I can find anything this time.

In the meantime, if you have any websites that you think may trigger the problem, that would be helpful.
Also, do you have any Antivirus software installed?

Regards,
Barb.-

Many thanks. I only started using the template when SP started causing problems; for a year or so, I used it without with no problems.

I'll try to keep a note, but I haven't been able to identify specific sites that consistently cause problems. An issue could be background tabs, so it is not that easy to detemine.

AVG Internet Security v16 fully updated. I switched to AVG because SB didn't work with Kaspersky and Windows 10. I don't trust Windows Defender however good SB maybe; and believe in a layered approach.

Just to add that it is the same on my laptop: different hardware but otherwise very similar setup

And also https://forums.malwarebytes.com after login using SP

And if I kill spUIAManager.exe FF returns to normal, and SP still works. No idea what that progran does.

From the horses (SP) mouth

"the UIAutomation feature (spUIAManager.exe I assume) handles autofill in Internet Explorer 64bit and also allows to perform application autofill. If you don´t need it, you can disable UIAutomation in the main user interface window of our app - Menu - Settings - Miscellaneous"

so I am now trying that.

Not ideal, so any chance of a SB fix please Barb?

Hi henryg,

I have been reading every update you posted here and testing it, but I have not been able to reproduce the issue.

I'll see what I can figure out about that UIAutomation and post an update (I'll also let the devs know and see if they have any suggestions).

Hello henryg,

Maybe this can help you (not sure, I still cannot repro the problem):

Close your Sandboxed applications and Sticky Password/Firefox (if running outside Sbie)
Create a new Sandbox
Right-click on your Sandbox -->Sandbox Settings ---> Resource Access --> Windows Access
Hit Add and enter the following:
$:spUIAManager.exe
Hit apply.
Go to Applications --> All Applications
Scroll down , double click on Sticky Password (if not enabled already).
Hit apply, hit Ok.
Go to Configure --> Reload configuration
Test sticky password functionality (if you receive any errors, try the same steps minus enabling the Sticky Password template).

Let us know the outcome.

Barb.-

Hi Barb

Yes, your suggestion seems to prevent Firefox freezing in a new sandbox; as opposed to not adding the $:spUIAManager.exe access setting in the same sandbox when it continued to freeze. So there is a definite link there, BUT make the same changes in my usual sandbox and FF continues to freeze.

Debugging my usual sandbox could be a real PITA, so I may be better accepting that I leave the SP application login automation facility turned off so that spUIAManager.exe does not load.
