[.02] Internet Explorer issues after updating Avast

Post by drp3636 » Fri Nov 16, 2012 3:33 pm

After updating Avast and Comodo, the 32-bit version of IE 9 V 9.0.11 runs extremely slowly. The 64-bit version barely works at all and give the following error messages:

SBIE1151 Cannot handle instruction FF84753E: D9,89,54,24,40,4C,89,44,24,48,83,64
SBIE2303 Could not hook ChangeServiceConfig2W (2)
SBIE2318 DLL initialization failed for 'sechost.dll'
SBIE1151 Cannot handle instruction 7745F87E: 3E,FF,FF,FF,48,83,C4,38,C3,90,90,90
SBIE2303 Could not hook SetWindowsHookExW (2)
SBIE2318 DLL initialization failed for 'user32.dll'
SBIE1151 Cannot handle instruction FF84753E: D9,89,54,24,40,4C,89,44,24,48,83,64
SBIE2303 Could not hook ChangeServiceConfig2W (2)
SBIE2318 DLL initialization failed for 'sechost.dll'
SBIE1151 Cannot handle instruction 7745F87E: 3E,FF,FF,FF,48,83,C4,38,C3,90,90,90
SBIE2303 Could not hook SetWindowsHookExW (2)
SBIE2318 DLL initialization failed for 'user32.dll'

Latest version of Firefox works just fine.

I am running under Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 64-bit (updated daily) using SB V 3.74. Avast is the latest V 7.0.1474. Comodo is the latest V 5.12.256249.2599.

I downloaded Avast and Comodo at the same time, so not sure which one is causing issues. But suspect Avast as it has caused problems with SB previously.

Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Don

A similar problem was reported here for IE 10.

http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=14056

But since you report the same problem for IE 9, I agree that it makes more sense this has to do with Avast or Comodo more than it has to do with the version of IE.

Please try to block Avast DLLs in Sandboxie settings. Go into Sandbox Settings > Resource Access > File Access > Blocked Access. Use the Edit/Add button and paste:
*\avast software\avast\*

Hi Tzuk,

Thanks for a speedy reply.

Followed your directions to the letter. Unfortunately, got the same error messages for IE 9 64-bit. Even with error messages, this version will load. But, if I try to link to a favorite, IE 9 freezes and I must close SB.

The 32-bit version only suffers from slower speed at startup. I had originally reported it to be extremely slow, but this is only true at startup. It seems to work about the right speed after loadup.

If you have any other suggestions, will be glad to try it.

Thanks again for your help.

I can reproduce this problem on the 64-bit version of the browser after installing avast. I won't release an immediate fix for this, but I will include this in the list of stuff to address in the next beta version, which is hopefully in just a few short weeks.

I can however suggest an immediate workaround for this problem. I can resolve the problem by applying the Blocked File Access setting to prevent the avast DLL from loading into the sandbox. You say adding *\avast software\avast\* did not work, please try this instead:
*\avast\*snx*
This should also fix the problems with favorites.

As for the 32-bit browser I can't identify any specific performance issues. Perhaps you have some addons in your 32-bit browser that cause a performance hit under Sandboxie? I see avast installer includes the Google toolbar, did you install this toolbar and if so did you add compatibility settings in Sandboxie for the Google toolbar?

Hi Tzuk,

Great job as usual tracking down the SB conflicts! Kudos to you.

Unfortunately, the second workaround didn't work. Get the exact same error messages.

As for the 32-bit browser slowdown, that issue is no longer a problem. Seems to have resolved itself. Don't know exactly why.

Look forward to you fixing the 64-bit IE conflict soon as I use this most every day.

Thanks again for a great product and your even greater support!

Are you sure you're entering the setting in the right place?
Sandbox Settings > Resource Access > File Access > Blocked Access
Might want to try a simpler setting:
*snx*dll

Hello again Tzuk,

Success! Thanks for the last workaround. This one did work.

Look forward to you permanently resolving this issue soon.

Thanks again.

Tzuk, does this in any way disable Avast's functionality (like web scanning) when running a sandboxed version of IE? Thanks.

If I add *\avast software\avast\* to Blocked Access this causes Adblock Plus to not work properly in Firefox. It basically causes this problem here http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopi ... ht=adblock

I used *\avast\*snx* instead and Adblock Plus works fine with this.

Just wondering if it was only me.

The incompatibility with avast should be fixed in version 4.01.02.
