Problem when launching explorer (Attaching files in Firefox)

Post by osbron » Mon Oct 12, 2015 7:49 pm

I'm currently using the latest version of firefox, and Avast Antivirus, running on windows 10.

The problem happens when I'm attaching a file and firefox launches the explorer window. It happens anywhere, from using gmail>attach, imgur>upload image or outlook>attach file (Basically anywhere where it launches the file picker)

The file dialogue will open normally, but sometimes when I navigate the folders, it will crash. 2 types of crashes:
1) Firefox closes suddenly and reports firefox had crashed, and prompts you to restart firefox
2) Firefox just closes and no dialogue to restart firefox. The sandbox will autodelete like I've set defaultBox to do so.

The crashes are at random. It doesn't happen everytime, but maybe 40% of the time. It ranges to the first folder which I navigate to in the quickLink menu on the left, to after opening a series of folders. It's completely at random, and everytime I upload something, I'll pray that it doesnt crash. A workaround is that some sites lets me drag-and-drop files. For that, no problems experienced. If you manage to attach something successfully, do not assume my problem doesnt exist. Try doing it 10 times in a row, each time upload different files in different folders. Navigate to different paths all over the place. Usually crashes when navigating paths, not when I hit the upload button.

For some clarifications, so that you do not need to give me the copy-paste replies to everyone here:
  • I've already uninstalled sandboxie and reinstalled it (I do not think that is the ultimate fix for everything mann, it's a software bug =.= )
  • I've tried it with Avast shields all off. It still occurs
  • My sandbox deletes automatically after every session, so it's a fresh sandbox every time.
  • My firefox is regularly updated
  • My windows updates are installed
  • I am in proper mental health and I have sufficient technical knowledge not to be considered a tech-noob
  • It happens whether drop-rights are enabled/disabled

I first suggest adding c:\sandboxie to any exclusion listing in Avast. Try again.

If that doesn't work, you may have to remove Avast. If it is causing this issues, simply disabling it may not have work totally. We've test Avast to some extent, and users have reported it works. However, it's best to start there & most of the issues are A/V compatibility of some sort.

As fir Firefox, any add-ons/Extensions running?

We haven't had any other issues with FF regarding uploading and navigating the pop up window.

Something you haven't tried is running the browser in a new sandbox. I suggest you create a new sandbox, dont copy settings from any existing sandbox and then run the browser. This might seen like a copy paste reply to you but using a different sandbox than the one you are using now might solve the issue you are experiencing.

I dont experience your issue in either of my two computers when using the DefaultBox, thats the sandbox where I run and force Firefox but I have in the past, being able to reproduce what you are talking about. In other words, I have had sandboxes where Firefox doesn't crash at all when using file explorer but at the same time, I also had sandboxes in the same computer at the same time where I can reproduce Firefox crashes as you move around using file explorer.
