Sandboxie now unusable?
Hi,
I have big problems with sandboxie above 3.7.6.
3.7.6 all works correctly, but from version 4 my apps not working.
3ds max - license error 5 - run only sandboxed installed out of sandboxie.
chrome not install
steam not working
etc etc.
I prefer all install to sandboxie - prevent to reinstall Windows. This idea is now dead.
When will be sandboxie usable as before? Is really good program but in actual version unusable.
I buy new hw with Windows 8.1 and 3.7.6 not working under 8.1
I have all software original.

Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
@Ihgs,
FWIW, I've been stuck on 3.76 for a long time too due to subsequent versions breaking some of my more commonly used apps. I made mention of this in several posts (you can search the forum if you're interested), but received very little in the way of response or help. My plan is to keep using SBIE 3.76 as long as I can. Eventually, I suspect I'll sadly need to make the decision to either abandon the apps that SBIE breaks, or SBIE itself.

Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
There just isn't a lot of demand to get DVD burning & 3D modeling software running under Sandboxie. These are just not large sources of malware.
Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
3D software from autodesk is really full of mess:-)
I want to have system clear. Tzuk said about autodesk licensing - sandboxie not support install flexnet because the 30 day trial can be restarted.
This is really bad argument, pirates have cracks and others. The software cracking or restarting trial version (In new software nearly impossible) is problem of user - not the sandboxie developer. Sandboxie can support all software or nothing. This is half solution of protection.
From version 4 I have lot of problems as bug mouse move in games, unsupported applications, chrome not working? omg ?
I want to have sandboxie as before - small, functional
Because I have bought this program , I am disappointed!
Sorry for my english

Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
There are a lot of requests for support from people that are using Sandboxie to get around trial periods and multi-user restrictions (typically with games). These requests have the lowest priorities of them all.
Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
Understood, Curt. My reason for using SBIE in these circumstances was not out of malware concerns, but rather to mitigate excessive, needless clutter on my systems. It's been a diligent practice of mine for many years, and corresponds with the following SBIE marketing features found on SBIE's home page:Curt@invincea wrote:There just isn't a lot of demand to get DVD burning & 3D modeling software running under Sandboxie. "Keep your system running smoothly: Prevent wear-and-tear in Windows by installing software in the isolated container"
"Configure your own sandboxes to meet your specific needs - install new software directly into a sandbox..."
"It's also great for testing apps you aren't sure of..."
Again, I do understand that time is valuable and that Invincea cannot devote the necessary resources to successfully resolve each and every conflict issue regarding SBIE. Still, it is disappointing that the use of some of my apps got broken with later versions of SBIE.

Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
I understand what you are saying, bs1. But the primary purpose of Sandboxie is to prevent malware from attacking your host system. Sbie v4 has much tighter security, which is why some legit apps fail in the sandbox. When it comes to compatibility issues, the Big 3 browsers (IE, FFX, Chrome) always have top priority (right now, Chrome 37-64 still has issues for some users). After that we have to look at which applications affect the most # of users. Something like a DVD burner is going to be very difficult to get working in the sandbox because it is very low level and probably involves a device driver -- plus they are very sensitive to timing issues. It wasn't that long ago that I remember having to kill all other Windows apps, including AV, in order to get a CD/DVD burner to work without failure.
I just want you to know that we are not ignoring you.

If you want to keep system clean with ability to install many software you want you may want to read my post:

Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
It's true that it's getting worse. Chrome struggles. Iron doesn't start in incognito. Metatrader won't run. A few other things that I don't remember anymore didn't run either this spring and summer. Just as the home page of Sandboxie suggest, I like to install stuff I experiment with into a sandbox to keep my system clean.
Looking at the rest of the posts, it might be more useful to list programs that are known to work and are guaranteed to do so (at least for paid for accounts). Or do it the way Wine handles their list https://appdb.winehq.org/. That's pretty useful and saves endless amounts of time.

Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
OK, I give you a list of programs that have worked for me for years under Sandboxie. Firefox, IE8 to 10, Foxit, Office in XP and Kingston, Libre Office in W7, KMPlayer, WMP, all addons and plugins that I have ever installed for Firefox, WinRar, 7Zip, HJ split. Those are my main programs and they all work well under SBIE.majokey wrote:Looking at the rest of the posts, it might be more useful to list programs that are known to work and are guaranteed to do so (at least for paid for accounts).
I don't install too many programs and don't install programs sandboxed other than browsers, video players and addons or plugins. I cant remember last time that I tried to install something in a sandbox and couldn't do it. I hardly ever see a unexpected SBIE message or even feel that SBIE is not allowing me to do something because it gets on the way.
I don't use Chrome but tested it yesterday and for me in my W7 the browser didn't crash. Chrome struggles? I am sure it is an struggle for Invincea to keep SBIE working great with Chrome after Chrome updates comes out. I can see that but I also see the effort that they put trying to maintain compatibility. I appreciate that.

Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
Bo, I think most...if not all...of us appreciate the continued support from Invincea. The point of this thread is to express disappointment over the fact that more recent versions of SBIE have rendered it less useful than in the past to install and/or test software apps. To SBIE users who don't use it for that reason, it's pretty much a non-issue. To SBIE users who did use it for that reason (in addition to using it for malware protection), it is an issue.
Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
Sandboxie is still quite usable, if most of your apps don't approved with v4+ then use v3.76(that is if your using XP/Win7). Don't forget that SBIE needs to adapt to ever changing threats, OS, and updates of often used Apps even if Tzuk were here he would have a hard time keeping up.
If not for Win8(and upcoming Win9) will probably be still using v3.xx, also with v4.xx Invincea is making it harder for SBIE to be cracked/patch, most functions or Apps will not normally work on cracked/patched SBIE(Been there, done that). Let's not forget that v4 is Tzuk last work not Invincea, only real issue is the slow response, update, and fix on their side.

Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
I use Sandboxie mostly to keep my system clean as well. I have many sandboxes, and it has helped my system tremendously. Every game or new application gets its own sandbox.
To play down the organizational feature of sandboxie is a mistake. If it was only about stopping malware, there would be no need for many of the features.

Re: Sandboxie now unusable?
A while ago I made the suggestion for Sandboxie to run in a file / registry virtualization mode only, without most of the other protections.
I used Sandboxie for a ton of other things prior to version 4... and it was very useful. The alternative is to use a full fledged virtual machine, but this is far less convenient.
I understand that SBIE is mostly a security tool, and I'd rather that side of it be locked down as tightly as possible... but it certainly has a lot of other potential applications that were really very useful.
