Virtual drives and file paths

Post by tururu » Mon Jul 16, 2007 2:44 pm

Hello:
While running a sandboxed installation of Thinstall I've come to a couple of questions. I have set many CloseFilePaths in Thinstall sandbox, for instance to D\movies, but the program still scans the files' paths I have forbidden. I have also tried to cheat a little, and created a virtual drive, but it's not recognized. The fake drive doesn't appear in sandboxed W. Explorer.
Why can't I install any virtual drive software in the sandbox?. For testing purposes: http://www.extradrivecreator.com/extradrivepro.zip
Why do the CloseFilePaths I have set still appear in W.Explorer?.I don't understand this at all; if I have "masked" D:\prOn\ why is it still present in sandboxed W.Explorer?.
Thanks.

What have your written in your INI exactly? The correct string is

ClosedFilePath

Perhaps a typo? Also, you cannot by default install drivers inside the sandbox. I'm assuming your virtual drive software must install a driver to function. You can install the driver outside the sandbox then allow your sandboxed instance of the program acces to load it, or follow the additional instructions in the link below.

Shame on me! . You are right, miswriting.

Well, the several programs I've installed come as standalone exe. I must be missing something. I thought they had problems to install because they redirected the file paths, or something similar. Isn't it a problem with hooks?
Thank you for your quick answer, wraithdu.

I reread your post, and it sounds like you have the virtual drive mounted outside the sandbox. Unfortunately I don't know why your sandboxed explorer can't see it. I'm guessing there's a resource being blocked. tzuk would have to help you troubleshoot that.

No, I just need it to run inside the sandbox, for testing purposes. I know they work outside the sandbox, but I'm not adding more software to my PC since I can use it sandboxed; I'm an addict to SBie. The point is that I can't install those programs, and I'd like to know why. If the reason is BlockDrivers sentence I'll workaround by other means.

Read the FAQ entry (link I provided) on BlockDrivers carefully. The BlockDrivers setting will allow/disallow programs running in the sandbox to load drivers that are already installed. To install new drivers, you need to follow the directions given, then in addition allow sandboxed programs to use them. However this is a pretty big security hole since, as tzuk explained in another recent post, Sandboxie cannot enforce its policies on drivers like it can on applications.
