outlook 2003 shuts down on open when sandboxed

Post by Unknown_User_914 » Sat Aug 11, 2007 4:38 pm

hi there,
just installed SB for the first time.
Running IE7 (XP Pro, SP2) sandboxed works just fine.
whenever I launch outlook 2003, outlook gives me an error that it is not installed for the current user and I should run setup, once I click on OK it shuts down.

please advice

I haven't tested Sandboxie with Office 2003. Is anybody else using Office 2003 and also seeing this?

I tried running Outlook 2003 sandboxed and it started fine. Sorry, wasn't able to reproduce your problems.

@ Tzuk
Can we give you any information about our system so that you are able to identify the problem?

PS: Congratulations! Sandboxie ist a great software. Please keep on developing!

Thanks! But I'm afraid I can't think of anything that you could tell me about your system. But perhaps you could try creating a new, empty account that is not associated with any email server. And check if you can start Outlook sandboxed for that account. If that works, you could start adding features into the "empty" account, such as email connection, and see when sandboxed Outlook stops working for that account.

Thank you for your message. I created a new user account and when I opened outlook the first time (sandboxed), windows installer is launched (also sandboxed) to configurate outlook. But then, an error message appeared reporting that the installation wasn't successful.

Then, I created a new user account and launched outlook the first time unsandboxed. Windows installer appeared an configurated outlook correctly (because it wasn't sandboxed). After that, I closed outlook and opened it sandboxed. Unfortunately, the same error message appeared that moonriver has described.

I think we can't find a solution.

I guess it will eventually work itself out, someone will be able to identify the precise configuration that leads to this, or I may stumble upon it if I do more tests with Outlook 2003. But I also want to do a bunch of other stuff, so for now I'm putting that off, and I agree: at this time, we can't find a solution.

I did have a similar situation but it was months ago and it was Excel, it was similar in that windows installer opened once sandboxed and then a second time unsandboxed.

What it turned out to be was that before the second installer could do anything, I had to delete the files that were in Windows/Installer that had to do with office. An empty Windows/Installer folder and an UNsandboxed installer was what did it for me.

hope this helps

Thank you for your idea. But I can't find a folder "installer" in the windows directory. I found the folder in another directory but there wasn't anything that has something to do with office.

Which folder do you mean exactly? Thanks.

I have the solution now:

I have reinstalled sandboxie but this time, I gave full administrator rights to the account I want to use outlook with and installed sandboxie under this account. Then I started outlook sandboxed and the error message didn't appear.

The problem was the following: Last time I installed sandboxie, I did this under an account with administrator rights but then I used outlook sandboxed with another account that had only user rights. For this reason, the error message appeared.

I think that MitchE323 may have been referring to the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from Microsoft.

Good to see that one fixed for you Cross, that solution made sense. I had meant the actual folder when referring earlier, I just realized it's a hidden folder so maybe you just cant see it. Anyway, Great!
