Google Chrome + Default PDF Viewer Problem

Post by Ncage1974 » Thu Feb 09, 2012 12:15 am

I have been having problems with viewing pdfs in google chrome for awhile . I had my mind made up tonight that i was going to figure it out. When i try to view a pdf file in chrome i get a grey page that says "missing plug-in". I also had foxit pdf viewer installed. I tried disabling / enabling both the foxit plugin and default google chrome pdf viewer without any luck. I also tried to uninstall foxit and that didn't help either. So i was messing with something ( i don't remember what) but i was running chrome outside of sandboxie (never thought sandboxie was involved) and i found it magically started working. I tested it multiple times and sandboxie definitely is the culprit but i don't get any error dialog from sandboxie.

My sandbox for chrome is pretty much the default other than:
1. have force chrome to startup in the sandbox (along with some other programs)
2. I have the sandbox delete all content when all programs exit.

I do have the "Experimental Protection (64-bit)" Enabled

I originally was running 3.6 but i upgrade to 3.64 and it didn't fix the problem.

I'm running Chrome 16.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate with latest updates

Anyone know whats going on?

thanks,
Ncage

Hi, upgrade to Chrome 17 and see if the problem persists. Also try and see if the problem is present under a newly created sandbox with default settings.
One Program to rule them all, One Program to confine them, One Program to wrest them all and in the sandbox bind them.

I don't use Win 7, but on XP I have no problem with using either the "Chrome PDF Viewer" or the "Foxit Reader Plugin for Mozilla" plugins for viewing .pdf files while Chrome is sandboxed.
I also run with Administrator rights and have Chrome 17 installed.
The built-in viewer seems a little quicker, but the Foxit plugin might offer some additional functionality.

When you type "chrome:plugins" in the address bar while sandboxed, and click on the [+] Details button on the far right side of the page, do you see any problems listed in those two entries?
The built-in viewer uses the file "pdf.dll" in the %Local AppData%\Google\Chrome\Application\(version number) folder, so it's hard to understand why that one wouldn't work for you, if it is Enabled.

As far as the Foxit plugin, on XP that plugin file is accessed from the Foxit Reader's Program Files folder.
You don't have any Sandbox Restrictions that would prevent access to that folder, do you?
How about un-checking the Drop Rights setting at:
Sandbox Settings > Restrictions > Drop Rights
