Firefox - Which Folders Need Permission?

Post by HarryStottle » Sat Jan 23, 2010 7:22 am

I use Sandboxie on 4 machines but on only one have I managed to get Firefox working exactly as I want. Buggered if I can see what I'm doing right or wrong!

I've used the Sandbox option to give Firefox full access to its profile folders and I've manually given it access to it's own \Program Files folder and so on. Yet it will not (in 3/4 cases) retain simple settings like "Show My Windows and Tabs From Last Time".

Can someone tell me which specific folder needs full access in order to store that kind of data?

Maybe your Firefox profile isn't where Sandboxie thinks it should be.
But I suggest an easier solution, use an un-sandboxed Firefox to set all those settings properly.

Firefox settings are stored in the file "prefs.js" in the Firefox profile folder.
There will also be a "sessionstore.js" file saved in the profile folder that must be allowed direct access, with the "Show My Windows and Tabs ..." setting checked.
Allowing direct access to the entire profile folder should allow access to both of those for a sandboxed Firefox, assuming your Firefox profile is located at the default location - as mentioned by tzuk.
(Not that I recommend allowing the entire profile folder as a direct access setting. I pick and choose files, not the entire folder.)

As far as the specific setting "Show My Windows and Tabs From Last Time" is concerned.
If it also does not work when unsandboxed, check to see if your Tools > Options > Privacy Tab > History
"Clear history when Firefox closes" is checked,
and if it is:
Click on the "Settings" button and uncheck History > "Browsing History"

P.S. Allowing direct access to the Program Files folder is a bad idea. I suggest you remove any such setting in Sandboxie.
One way to get an idea of what is needed for direct access settings is to make sure that Sandboxie's auto-delete is not selected, and use Windows Explorer to examine the files in the sandbox folder when the sandboxed programs are ended. You can see what files were written into the sandbox, and decide if any of them should have been given direct access.

Thanks chaps. Guest 10 - I actually found a reference to the role of the Privacy settings elsewhere.

Those who haven't already discovered it might be interested to learn of the "Session Manager" addon for Firefox - which is the best solution I've discovered for the problem. You can set it up to store sessions exactly as you would want in or out of the Sandbox and it can store multiple sessions which is really neat. (Just search in the Add On manager and it will take you there)

I take your point about access to the Program Files. That was done in desperation trying to get the damn thing to co-operate. I shall revert to more cautious settings having found the Session Manager.

For the time being this problem is resolved.
