Automatically delete contents of sandbox problem

Post by Paul_K » Fri May 18, 2007 9:07 am

I created a new sandbox called NonSecureBox, to test the "Automatically Delete Contents of Sandbox" feature (V 2.86).
Programs run fine in the sandbox, but the sandbox contents are not deleted when the sandboxed program ends unless I also specify a Recover folder in the "Set Automatic Clean-up Options..." window, and there is something to Recover in that folder.
After Sandboxie asks if I want to Recover the file, it will then delete the sandbox. If there's nothing to Recover, it does not delete the sandbox.

This configuration does not automatically delete the sandbox contents when the sandboxed program ends:

[NonSecureBox]
Enabled=yes
CopyLimitKb=32768
AutoDelete=Yes

BlockDrivers=y
BlockFakeInput=y

After I select "My Documents" as a Recover folder:
RecoverFolder=%Personal%

If I run Notepad in the NonSecureBox and do not save any file to the recover folder, then when Notepad ends the sandbox is not deleted.
If I save a file from Notepad to the Recover folder, after ending Notepad, Sandboxie will delete the sandbox after asking me if I want to Recover.

If I run Firefox in the NonSecureBox, I have to have something in a folder that's specified for recovery, and then Sandboxie will delete the sandbox contents after I say yes or no to recover the file.

I have carefully Reloaded Configuration, after changes to the configuration file, so I know that's not the problem.
I wonder if I'm missing something, or if it's by design that a Recover Folder must be specified, and contain a recoverable file, in order for the Automatically Delete Contents ... feature to work?

Maybe the reason it wont auto delete the contents if you dont have any files in your specified "recoverfolders" is because your sandbox is already empty to begin with. if thats not the case, then i think you might have found a bug, although it only appears to occur on your account? Also it might have something (although i dont know what) to do with the fact your running more than one sandbox, did auto delete work fine when you had only 1 sandbox?

Thanks for the reply...
This is my first attempt to use the "Automatically delete..." feature on any of my sandboxes (count now at 3).

I'm assuming that this setting should cause Sandboxie to delete the entire folder, after all of the processes that are sandboxed in it are ended.

In the case of the new sandbox that I created ("NonSecureBox"): when I first run Notepad sandboxed in NonSecureBox, Sandboxie creates the "%APPDATA%\Sandbox\NonSecureBox" folder.

If I then save a text file from Notepad, and have no Recover folders specified, when I close Notepad I'm assuming that the %APPDATA%\Sandbox\NonSecureBox folder should be deleted. This does not happen.

The NonSecureBox folder remains on my hard drive after all processes that were sandboxed in it have ended. That folder contains the usual "Drive" and "User" folders, plus the "Reghive" files. It also contains the file that I saved from Notepad.

If I do specify a Recover folder, then after choosing to recover or not, the entire NonSecureBox folder is deleted from my hard drive.

It appears that this must be a problem only on my system, since no one else seems to have reported a problem with the "Auto delete..." setting. Or am I wrong in believing that the NonSecureBox folder should always be deleted after all of it's sandboxed processes have ended, whether any files are recovered or not?

Not necessarily. I think by default Sandboxie configures a few folders for auto-recovery, so it's quite possible that this is in fact a bug, and you're the first to stumble upon it. :) I've written it down, and I'll look into it when time permits.

I have also got a similar problem in my created sandboxies, but instead, all are folders. The files are deleted. May be I descript some syndromes to the folders to see if they help.

1) On double clicking the folder that cannot be deleted, it gives a popup alert says the folder cannot be saved. (I don' know whether the message is translated sharply or not, but more or less should be a similar meaning)

2) On deleting(both "del" and "shift+del") the folders gives an alert message

"Cannot delete the folder

Please ensure some free spaces are on the harddisk and are not protected, and the files are not in use. "

3) In the content dialog by the right click>content, it gives 0 bytes for size, and for disk size, no folder, no file.

4) On unlocking the folder using Unlocker, Unlocker says "No Locking handle found".

5) *But the folder name and the levels up folder names can be changed without any alert.

The folders in my sandboxie are there for some time, the oldest folder found that cannot be deleted is on March 4, 2007.

So now it works fine, and I don't know why:
The Automatically Delete Contents of Sandbox now works fine for me. The sandbox is deleted after the sandboxed program ends. I've tried it on a newly created sandbox, with no other options checked, and it also works fine.

I guess I really am going insane :?
