[.04] Skype and SBIE service intensive CPU and RAM usage

Post by About:blank » Mon Apr 08, 2013 8:04 am

Windows 8 Pro 64-bit
SBIE 4.01.04
Skype Portable 6.3.0.105

Skype lives in a folder on the hard drive and set to run in a Sandbox (with the Defaultbox settings except for different Quick Recovery folders and a forced run program that is Skype) and not installed in the Sandbox. Under these conditions Skype.exe is constantly (tested over a period of few hours) using about 8-12% CPU and about 185 MB of RAM, compared with 0% of CPU usage (with transient sporadic peaks of 2-3%) and ~95MB of RAM when not sandboxed, which is the usual behavior of Skype, at least on my system.
The SBIE service is also constantly at about 5% CPU usage, returning to normal after sandboxed Skype is closed.

Other then that Skype seems to work fine, no Drag & Drop support, which I guess is expected, but not even from a direct access folder, which I thought would be supported. I also have difficulties with keeping the Chat log, but this is probably due to me incorrectly setting write rights to the relevant locations on the HDD (I'm new to SBIE, so still learning).

I'm not even sure if there is any real value in running Skype in a Sandbox. I'm not concerned about Malware spreading through the Chat itself, but more concerned about it spreading through those stupid Skype ads that pollute certain sections of the interface.

I would appreciate any input.

Thank you
