Saving a user name

Post by Bellzemos » Thu Dec 13, 2012 12:40 pm

Hi! Which setting do I have to tick (for one session only) to be able to preserve a user name which I type in when I log in to a forum? I use Firefox. Thanx.

Do I have to allow direct access to bookmark & history, cookies, passwords or session management?

Unfortunately that didn't work. I enabled cookies, run Firefox, entered my user name and password, logged in, logged out and closed Firefox. Then I disabled cookies again, run Firefox and my username wasn't there.

Any other idea? Or did I do it wrong?

You logged out while cookies were being saved out of the sandbox.
Try exiting the browser without logging out of the site, then change the sandbox setting for cookies.

I don't really understand why would logging out before exiting FF be wrong.

Should I do it like that:

1. Enable direct access to cookies in FF.
2. Run FF sandboxed and log in to a forum.
3. Close/terminate FF while still logged in.
4. Change SBIE settings back (restricted cookies).
5. Run FF sandboxed and I will be able to log in just a click on the filed as my user name will apear?

Thank you for helping me.

That's what I suggest you try, to see if logging out might be modifying the cookie(s) for the site.
The problem is that the site's cookies can also be used to keep track of which threads in a forum that you have read, so an old cookie that isn't updated each time you go there may not give you the results you are looking for.

Another option involves allowing cookies to be saved out of the sandbox, all the time, but not using the site's "Log me on automatically" feature. Of course, then you are allowing that site's and others to save cookies.
Plus, the password needs to be saved, out of the sandbox.
That's what I do in Firefox and Chrome.
You don't normally have to allow 3rd party cookies to be saved, if you can uncheck that in the browser's options.

I periodically go through the browser's list of cookies and delete those that aren't for sites where I log in.
Plus, I have many cookies set to "Allow for session only" in the browser's settings, so they are deleted when the browser program ends.
