Should I prefer 32bit or 64bit applications?

Post by Ransom » Sun Mar 20, 2016 5:05 am

I'm running Win10x64, and multple apps are available both x86 and x64 like Firefox, Chrome or Office. WIth JPSoft's tcc, I experienced that running x64 sandboxed might be tricky, and x86 is the only working choice for this case.

Question: When in doubt, is it recommended to run apps in the 32bit flavor because Sandboxie has an easier job with them? I can live with the minor performance hit, often x64 is slower anyway due to more memory usage. And the potential security advantages of running native x64 apps should be outweighed by using Sandboxie?

Sanboxie fully supports 64 bit. 64 can offer better security and speed (subjective) and among other features depending on the program being used.

This was one of the major updates after SBIE v3.76. Among other required Windows security updates. This is one of
Many reasons users "complain' 3.76 SBIE seems so different from the current, modern version. It basically lacks 64 bit and modern code.

However, there is a ton of difference in there too, not only In SBIE but all 32/64 bit programs. From memory, to code, security, etc for 64 vs 32 programs.

Firefox has had issues with 64 bit recently, but that's something Mozilla is looking at. As for browsers being 64 bit, honestly by default both FF and Chrome wants to install a 32 bit version on a 64 bit machine. Mozilla FF 32 bit seems to be more stable in SBIE with their 44/45 builds. They acknowledge this by recommending 32 bit if users are having odd problems with 64.

I suggest 64 bit programs if you have a use clear and known use case that needs or requires 64 bit architecture etc and access to more than 4GB of RAM. Browser needed that? Doubtful.

I do remcommend 64 bit Windows, and you can use 32 / 64 as you choose, but not in reverse.

In addition, OPERA has a Windows version, OPERA 37.0 / 64 bit that I am using WITH 5.10--64 bit SANDBOXIE, very successfully.......on this 64 bit WIN7 computer. The Opera Blog talked about some problem with '37-64bit', but I sure haven't seen or felt it...
