Really dissapointed with post 3.76 releases

Post by RizingPower » Thu Jan 15, 2015 3:52 pm

I have been using 3.76 for well over 2 years with no problems so far. Why? The last time I tried upgrading post 3.76, it's as though Kaspersky suddenly stopped working. I upgraded to 4.14 a few days ago and today, I must have mistyped a URL by accident since I was redirected to a fake AV website that claimed I was infected. I deleted the contents of the sandboxie right away, but felt truly dissapointed that Kaspersky anti-banner did NOT block the site or ad, like 3.76 does. In fact, upon initially upgrading to 4.14, I found out that sites that normally did not show ads suddenly showed ads.

After downgrading to 3.76 and revisiting the same sites do the ads dissapear again. Initially I thought this was a Kaspersky problem, but it is apparently a sandboxie problem. Downgrading sandboxie, not kaspersky, caused my normal kaspersky internet protection shields to work again.

I rely on sandboxie to prevent permanent damage from happening to my computer, but rely on Kaspersky to prevent sandboxie from resorting to such drastic measures to begin with, with sandboxie acting as a fail safe. The ability of sandboxie to complement KIS really shakes my trust in post 3.76 releases, no matter how many nice features they add to it.

So now I'm wondering, what the hell did they change? 3.76 is currently the only safe release for me, kaspersky URL and Anti-banner protection wise.

From your description, it appears that 4.14 does a better by not interfering with your browser and anti-virus softwares but kept them contained in their sandbox so that no damage is inflicted on your computer

To stop the ads, try approaching it by using browsers add-ons and extensions. 8)

It is obvious there was a before and after version 3.76. The internal changes introduced in version 4.x series were a step back in a product which was pretty stable.

Saying two years later after version 4.01 was released changes to hooking engine are still being introduced should be enough to understand how inmature is Sandboxie 4.x compared to 3.x.

Funny how it also doesn't work with BSA. You neglect to mention that two years later Operating Systems move on. We now have Win 8.1 with Win 10 coming up real soon. Have you considered that the hooking changes aren't a sign of immaturity but in fact slowly getting ready for Win 10. I won't be surprised if in two years SBIE 3.76 won't run at all.

Rizingpower SBIE is probably unique, KIS isn't. Knowing KIS, I doubt it will get better. I'd suggest looking, there are other good suites out there.

What is the point of mentioning BSA every time? I just do not get it. You just look silly doing that.

And I consider pretty objective saying 4.x represented a step back with respect to 3.x because 3.x was developed for years and 4.x represented a big change in the internal architecture. Therefore Sandboxie went from a mature product to something which is still looking the same stability.

I think I understand RizingPower´s concern: why KIS works with 3.76 but does not with 4.x? I do not think "look for other suite" is a good reply.

In this case the only satisfactory reply can only be technical. A reply which explains why under 3.76 KIS is able to work properly but not under 4.14. And I do not think you or anyone not related to Sandboxie´s development can give such reply.

I keep bringing up BSA because your posts have an underlying tone suggesting a bitterness towards SBIE. You never post anything positive, and there is a lot of positive. Your 2nd post is a good example. Sure SBIE, matured up to 3.76, and it has sort of had it's struggles. But what are those struggles. First Windows itself. Went to 8.0 and then 8.1. A lot of developers have struggled. And now we are looking at Windows 10. This so called maturity is a never ending moving target. Plus the developers have had to deal with changes in chrome. You leave a lot of those details out of your post.

As to KIS. Kaspersky has always been hard to work with other software. I used to test for them, but I gave up. Sure only Invincea can give a technical explanation, but they get it working and the next version of KIS breaks it. My recommendation isn't good on a theoretical basis, but practically.....

Peter2150, there is a group of users like RizingPower who have been waiting patiently for version 4 to mature while stuck with now unsupported version 3. This is not a satisfactory situation, increasingly frustrating. Just for you to know, the latest windowsupdate kb3023266 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3023266) breaks 3.76 driver install again.

Please do not distract from the original OP with your personal opinion about Buster. His follow on post was measured and to the point about the version 4 problems raised by OP.

This problems between Kaspersky and Sandboxie is not new, the antivirus itself is never the problem, the issue is always caused by using an addon with the sandboxed browser. In RizingPowers case, this addons are the URL filter and Anti-banner.

RizingP, you can not use those addons and Sandboxie. You have to make a choice. I would follow Nananas advice and get something like Adblock plus and NoScript and forget about using the conflicting Kaspersky addons. NoScript and ABP work great along SBIE. I have been using this addons for about the same time as SBIE and have never seen anything like a fake AV. And best of all, never ever a conflict with SBIE.

Hi superkryo

Don't be surprised if more and more OS updates break 3.76. Version 4 maturing is a measured thing. I wouldn't be surprised if stuff SBIE dev's are doing is working towards windows 10. I am finding Firefox 35 and my other protection is working better in a VM running WIn 10TP then it runs under Win 7x64 running unsandboxed. I don't think at this point, most any security software is "mature"

Well, Pete, for some users SB is also for maintaining a registry sanity in the Windows madhouse as well as for extremely convenient software "restore" after OS reinstall. Version 4 has been plagued by hooking issues which make such a usage rather difficult. My point earlier was that one should be open-minded about bug reports, always give them the benefit of doubt. SB has a user base of a diverse purposes, which in my view should be a valuable asset for the company. It will be more than a pity if sandboxie paints itself into a browser sandbox.

Superkyro, I for one hate it when people think of Sandboxie as a browser in a sandbox. I know there are users that keep using 3.76 because some important application that they use dont run well or dont run at all under version 4. I feel really bad about that. But honestly, most programs work nice under Sandboxie version 4. In my case use, I sandbox most programs in both on my computers and they work great, perhaps not perfect but good enough that for the most part, using my computers feel exactly as if I was not using SBIE. How much better than that can it be? :)

Hi Bo, readers of this forum have benefited enormously over the years from your insights and help. A true guru indeed.

wrt to the bugs of version 4 and Invincea's support, however, it seems you have been more generous to the company and dismissive at time to users. In fact your comments above is contradictory:

The thing is that a non-working software maybe a must-have for a user, no matter how obscure to others. In such a case, it does not help or matter if other programs work nicely. So yes, it can be much better. What's worse is that bug reports in the beta forums have not been consistently responded to or even acknowledged.

That is what you think but I already told you publicly you are wrong. So stop! Ok?

As I told privately, when I do some criticism I do it as Sandboxie lifetime license owner.
Peter2150 wrote:You never post anything positive, and there is a lot of positive.
Sandboxie 4.15.8 has been released.

What has been one of the first comments after the announcement?

http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... 20#p106191
Windows 8 x64 / IE10

IE won't start : "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application."

Rebooting, reinstalling, and rebooting again does not correct the problem.

Reinstalling 4.15.7 corrects all problems.
For me, that is like two steps further and three steps back, and there is nothing positive there.

And I completely agree with superkryo when he says bo.elam has been more generous with Invincea and dismissive at time to users. And this comment can and must be applied to you too.

Do you have any interest keeping this attitude?

You accuse me of being negative due the problems in BSA. Do you want I accuse you of being excessive positive because you have a personal interest?, i.e. because you receive free licenses for keeping such good attitude.

Do you think that would be fair?

So I repeat: Stop!

Sandboxie´s support suffered with the company change. As superkryo and myself have told, bug reports in the beta forums have not been consistently responded to or even acknowledged.

I still did not get a reply about why Sandboxie´s lead developer is the person in charge of giving support in the forum instead other of the members of the team. That is not serious, or do not you see so?!?

My critics are objective because they are based on facts and I do not really understand why I have been the only user complaining about this situation in the forum until now. I really appreciate superkryo´s comments because I was feeling alone, as I felt when I was banned for no reason by Ronen and nobody complained.

Oh, I am an uncomfortable user because I do not shut up as most users do. Live with that!

Other consideration I want to do publicly:

Not responding consistently to bug reports creates a false sensation where people may think things are working fine.

I am not fooled and I am aware of how things are really, but other people may be fooled.

If this "tactic" works is because users post their reports and rarely insists for a solution.

An example:

http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... 11&t=19481
More than a month later and no official response or acknowledgement.
Is sandboxie team reduced to one guy working part time on weekends now?
Very, very sad anyone says things are positive and my criticism is out of place.

That "more than a month later" was told back in october. And that was the last comment on thread. Sad. VERY sad.

Other example:

http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... 17&t=19990

dewege opened thread on December 5th and bumped it on January 6th. The topic would be forgotten if I had not participated.

Peter2150 & bo.elam: insisting the support is fine you do more harm than beneffit to Sandboxie. Open your eyes or stop with your personal interests (if you have them). If you do not want to help, stay away from threads where users complain, with all reason, about the lack of support.

I am a lifetime license user of Sandboxie and I have never received any free licenses or any other benefits from the Sandboxie team (be it Ronen or Invincea). I use Sandboxie daily, on 2 machines of minem since 2010 or so. I always advise other computer users to try it, some have then bought the full version, some stayed on the free version but most of them were intrigued and pleasantly surprised by Sandboxie.

For me, the v3.76 was working perfectly but that is an outdated old version now. I've been using the v4.x since 4.06 came out and with the exception of some minor bugs I'm happy with it. I can say myself that the v4 is more buggy than v3, but for me it is perfectly usable. One of the biggest problems is a weird problem I have with Firefox but I don't think it's really Sandboxie related since no one eles seems to have such a problem here.

About the support, yes, when Ronen was here I think the support was a bit faster and there was more of it in general. Why practically only Curt is answering the questions now - I guess he's the main guy behind the Sandboxie, others probably focus on other Invincea products and services (that's just a guess of course) and he probably knows the most about techniacal stuff related to Sandboxie - so he's also the support. I guess that's how it is now.

Nothing is perfect and everything can get better but I have to say that I am quite happy with Sandboxie.
