How AV def's get updated if running SB

So I posted this a year ago and didn't get an explanation. Was told there is no connection between SB and my AV.

How can my definitions be updated if I'm running SB? If I were prompted that something needed to be downloaded from the sandbox, similar to any other content, that would make sense. Instead my 'definitions were updated' window pops up as if I were using FF alone. I don't see how that is possible considering how SB is supposed to work.

AV programs are installed outside of any sandbox, so they are never running sandboxed - including their automatic update function.

So my AV must 'know' when I'm online and takes the opportunity to update, in the background. Didn't think of that.
