i must be stupid but i need installation help
downloaded CURRENT VERSION: 2.2.2.3 to my thumb drive (Q)and have it below

in(Q) is a folder "other apps" in which I have put a sandieboxie folder .
in this sandboxie folder it has one:
folder " sandboxieportable" and
the file sandboxieportable _2.2.2.3.exe

The folder "sandboxieportable " has in it 3 folders and 6 files below:

folders

1 APP( folder sandboxie which is empty, and folder DefaultData with the folder "settings" in which is Sandboxie_default.ini ),
2Data (registry), and
3Other(which has SandboxiePortable.ini in it)

files
changelog.txt
CrashClean Cleanup.exe
Liscense.txt
Licesne_portable.txt
readme.txt
sandboxiePortable.exe

in the readme.txt
it says after installing the SandboxiePackable package, then install sandboxie from authors web site
this executes,and is not zipped
which files to which APP\Sandboxie directory (computer or thumb drive?)
where is the$PLUGINSDIR folder on the computer or the thumb drive?

what do I do now?
thanks

Please read the readme a little more carefully -

==============
After installing the SandboxiePortable package, download Sandboxie
from the author's website (at least v3.02.25) -

http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?DownloadSandboxie
or
http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=11

Open it with 7-zip. Extract the contents of the root of the
archive
==============

Extract the executable that you downloaded from the Sandboxie website (at least version 3.02.25 or higher) using 7-zip. Nowhere did I say to install it locally. The $PLUGINSDIR is inside the executable, you'll see it when you open it with 7-zip. All file extractions should be done to your USB drive (as there shouldn't be any local install).

Portable sandboxie

I too am having trouble extracting sandboxie 3.20 with 7-zip. I get an error message stating it is an unsupported archive. I think the new version does not work the same way as the previous ones, the instructions may need to be modified. I followed your comments, I downloaded sandboxie to my hard drive, then tried extracting it to my thumb drive into the app\sandboxie folder. Got the error message. I then copied the sandboxie.exe to my thumb drive and tried to extract it from there. Same error.

Sorry, not sure what to tell you. I have no problem extracting v3.20.01 (latest) with 7-zip. If you have 7-zip installed, right-click on the installer and choose 'Open Archive'.

If you truly can't get it to work, you can install it, then copy the files. Hopefully you'll be able to find kmdutil.exe in your temp directory somewhere (try to find it before you exit the installer completely). Then uninstall the local copy.

You could also try Universal Extractor (UniExtract). This should work in all cases.

Thanks for the clarification. I tried your method again with the other utility, seemed to work. I extracted the files to the thumb drive. I moved Kmdutil.exe from the $pluginsdir to the apps\sandboxie folder. One clarification please, do you copy $pluginsdir to the apps\sandboxie as well or just the Kmdutil.exe?

I am now at this section: "If this is the first time you are running this package, you can use an INI file from a local Sandboxie installation (recommended at least version 3.02.25). But all [UserSettings_XXXXXXXX] sections will be deleted and replaced by a [UserSettings_Portable] section with a few default values. This section can be (re)configured through the Sandboxie GUI." Do I copy the ini to sandboxie portable or apps\sandboxie, and do I reconfigure the user settings or does your statement imply that the program will do so automatically?

1 - You just need kmdutil.exe from the $PLUGINDIR directory. You shouldn't copy the whole thing.

2 - If you have a local install of v3.02.25 or higher, copy your Sandboxie.ini to the App\Sandboxie directory. Just run the launcher, and it will make the necessary changes. After that, recofigure your Sandboxie UserSettings through the program GUI (mostly hiding message windows and such, sandbox settings are retained in the sandbox sections). If you don't have an INI file from that version or higher, just run the launcher and it will copy a small default INI before it launches the program. You can configure it through the GUI as usual.

NOTE - I just thought I'd say that SandboxiePortable_2.2.2.3 has topped 201 downloads :)

** UPDATED INSTALLER

The installer now has a page to choose a pre-existing Sandboxie INI file. Hopefully this will alleviate some setup confusion. The README has been updated to reflect this change.

The installer now has its own version number.

NOTE -
I'm pulling the download for the old versions of Sandboxie now that version 3.20 is a stable release.

Portable versioning

Post by esalkin » Mon Nov 19, 2007 9:25 am

How about making the portable version match the "real" version? For instance, the current 2.2.2.3 is based on SBIE 3.20 so the pSBIE version should be 3.20.x.x.x
That would make it easier to keep track.

I thought about that, but the version numbering in NSIS is X.X.X.X only. That and there's no reason for me to release a new launcher for every version of Sandboxie that is released. The current launcher is actually based off the changes made in Sandboxie 3.02.25, and is simply compatible with the current higher versions.

I make new releases for new features or compatibility updates. The launcher is pretty much set at the moment until any more sensible feature requests are made, or Sandboxie changes again. The recent updates have been installer updates only, and do not necessitate current users re-download the file.

So for now there are two version numbers - the installer version, and the launcher version. The launcher version is contained in the installer file name, and the installer version is found either in the tooltip, the installer's properties, or the installer window branding text.

Hi!

I tried to run Sandboxie Portable from my thumb drive at school. But as soon as the splash-screen is shown sandboxie is removed from the pc again (the window that says "Stop SbieSvc ..." is shown and sandboxie doesn't start). I hope you know what I mean.

PC-Conf: Windows 2000 Professional 5.00.2195 SP4 (don't know about any other security patches)
AMD-K6(tm) 3D Processor
AT/AT-COMPATIBLE
196.128 KB RAM

The PC is set up in a domain environment but there's no screen saying something about a license issue (I use the "free version" at the moment).

I hope this is enough information and you can fix this as soon as possible.

Greetings

PS: There's a "Wächter-Karte" in the PC. After a restart the config. and all other things are reverted to their defaults but that shouldn't affect Sandboxie Portable in it's functionallity.

This is due to the domain restriction. The Portable version goes into its cleanup (Stop SbieSvc... etc) as soon as SbieCtrl.exe is stopped (ie you exit the program). If Sandboxie is run on a domain PC, SbieCtrl automatically quits, hence causing your immediate cleanup.

Sorry, but there's nothing I can do about the domain restrictions on PCs (it will work on laptops now since v3.20.01).
