Virtual Desktop?

Post by Guest » Wed Apr 30, 2008 4:46 pm

Is it possible to create a virtual desktop for each sandbox and when switched to, all desktop item, start menu, etc runs inside the box? (instead of right click on the box and ... which is quite confusion for a non-geeky user) The desktop can have a little title bar on top, when clicked, show a list of virtual desktops. (see returnil, they have one, but nothing to switched of course)

Thanks.

Well I dont know about others, but I would actually think that virtual desktops would be more confusing to "non-geeks" then a simple right click...

Anyways, the idea isn't bad but I dont know if it'll be incorporated or not.

The idea is not to expect a regular user to use the box and switch, but to lock everything in the box so they can't mess up the real machine while you are away. It's also more convenient for expert user if they can access everything directly from window, rather than right click the box every time.

Again, check the logo Returnil put on the desktop. Of course, they only have a on/off switch and require a reboot. I would expect a similar thing, but when clicked, allow me to switch the entire desktop amongst multiple sandboxes. It will definitely bring the usability of sandboxie to a new level, although I'm not sure if it's technically feasible to switch desktop on the fly.

Oh ok, I see what you mean now.
Well like I said, I think it's a cool idea, however, you ask anyone and they will tell you, the one thing tzuk doesn't like, is to incorporate major GUI elements into his programs, after all, how else do you think he keeps the program down to 370Kb?

I don't think it takes much coding to accomplish this, just reload window shell with different desktop, start menu, etc. will probably do the trick. In my opinion, it's the only way to deliver this wonderful program to the general public. He certainly has the incentive to put these in the paid version of the program

Of course, a completely rewritten, super hot shell wouldn't hurt either

Hmm, this might be better sort of as a 3rd party project wouldn't you say so? Maybe like an "addon"?

Hmm, anyone here got great experience in coding programs?

I've got some experience building apps, though I definitely ain't a pro...

That fancy desktop is just for fun. You don't really need that for Sandboxie, just reload Windows explorere.exe with redirected desktop, start menu, etc. I know how to do some of it manually in the current desktop, but not expert enough to reload the shell. But since Sandboxies's job is to intercept everything, it doesn't seem to be a big challenge for the developer.

Of course, you need something on the desktop to remind you if you are for real or boxed in and provide a way to switch over. A more fancy version, I don't know if it's possible, would be reload the shell inside a window, almost like a remote desktop type of window. Imagine multiple window opening on your machine, each point to a different boxes with full desktop experience. That would be truly amazing.

Unfortunately, I'm just dreamer, not up for the challenge myself.

Another thought. Instead of full shell replacement, can sandboxie search All Users/Current User start menu and desktop, replace all shortcuts with "C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\Start.exe" "whatever program to run"?

This can be initiated from tray icon, and also show an indicator of current shell status.
