Acronis + Explorer / xplorer2_lite freeze after right-click on items[SOLVED]

Post by CBruce » Fri Sep 08, 2017 3:02 pm

Windows 10 v.1703
SandBoxie v.5.2.0 64-bit - (unregistered)
problem app = xplorer2_lite 32-bit v.3.4.0.3 [Ansi] LITE 6/29/2017 - (free version)
http://zabkat.com/
anti-virus = VIPRE - (already tested with it turned off completely)

xplorer2_lite (file explorer) launches and runs without a problem until I right-click on any file or folder - whether in the folder tree or in one of the file list panes.

No context menu appears. xplorer2_lite freezes completely. Even the title bar system controls (minimize, maximize, and close) are unable to be clicked. All I can do is terminate the app from inside the SandBoxie Control panel.

I've given xplorer2 direct access to the folder paths in use:

Hello-

I just installed the tool in sandboxie with same versions. I was able to successfully use it no problem without any changes to the sandbox.

Can you create a fresh sandbox and try installing again?

I downloaded and tested 3.4.0.4 x86/x64 (both) Ultimate trial (I must be blind as I didn't see a free/lite option) on Windows 10 x64 CU (Fully updated) and had no issues with installing or running it inside SBIE and the right click context menu did NOT freeze it here.

I have not yet tested with VIPRE being installed.

Update: Found the Free one and tested it (x86) with the same results. I'll see about resetting the VM and adding VIPRE. I do HATE these trials that require email addresses /sigh

Update 2:
VIPRE 10.1.4.33 - 32-bit
Definitions 60960 - 7.73127
VIPRE engine 3.9.2671.2 - 3.0

Same results, no freeze/crash here =( Sorry but without seeing it I can't be sure why this is happening...

Hi JimC and Syrinx. Thanks for the feedback - but still the same problem.

Hmm...
  • I've tried both the free lite version of xplorer2 x32 and the trial x64 version - still get the "pending" circle-of-app-death when right clicking on a file. The entire app freezes - even the Title Bar, [-] Minimize, and [X] Close. I have to terminate the app from Sandboxie Control to kill it.
  • Both versions of xplorer2 run and react normally if installed outside Sandboxie.
  • I have ensured that all Windows updates are current.
  • I have rebooted a lot of times.
  • I have uninstalled and reinstalled Sandboxie a few times.
  • I have created new sandboxes with default settings each time I've reinstalled Sandboxie.
Are there any Sandboxie settings that might make a difference - or any logs that might show what's happening - (since yours both work!)?

Thanks!

Hello CBruce,

Can you please post the results of your Resource Access Monitor? - Use the "</> button for format it - (Make sure to follow the steps in a new Sandbox)
https://www.sandboxie.com/ResourceAccessMonitor

Are the files/folders that you are clicking on in your root drive, or are they somewhere else? Would you mind providing the exact repro steps that you are using, so that I can test them?

Regards,
Barb.-

Hi Barb. I watched the Resource Access Monitor (RAM) output while launching and running xplorer2. Before I right-clicked on a file, RAM got to this line... "WinCls X Progman". After I right-clicked on a file, xplorer2 locked up completely with just the little spinny circle. And there was no further output in the RAM window at that point.

My steps:
  1. Create a new SB sandbox with defaults
  2. Install xplorer2 in the sandbox via [Run any program]
  3. Launched SB RAM utility for that xplorer2 sandbox
  4. No output showed in RAM window originally
  5. Launched xplorer2 in sandbox from SB tray icon utility
  6. Saw the RAM output in the codeblock below
  7. Selected my D: drive
  8. RAM output did not change
  9. Changed to a subdirectory with a text file in it
  10. RAM output did not change
  11. Right-clicked on that text file... and xplorer2 locked up completely
  12. RAM output did not change

Re: xplorer2_lite freezes after right-click on any item

Post by Barb@Invincea » Fri Sep 15, 2017 5:11 pm

CBruce,

I cannot reproduce the issue (no Antivirus tested yet). I added a second drive to my VM and navigated it (and right-clicked /launched things) with xplorer_lite without problems.
I also tried installing xplorer in a Sandbox on a different drive, same results: everything worked fine (I navigated to folders with text files, as well as random files and right-clicked on them).
If you can, try removing your antivirus software (disabling it may not do the trick) for testing purposes, see if that makes any difference.

Are you using any specific settings in xlplorer? How about Sandboxie? Is the file you posted before the full configuration file?
Are there any other applications installed on your computer that might be modifying Windows Explorer?

Regards,
Barb.-

I'm getting these problems after installing Windows 10 Pro Insider Slow Ring today, but with the regular explorer (not xplorer2). Symptoms are identical to yours. Do you happen to be running Windows 10 Insider?

Barb, here's something interesting that may provide a clue...

The screenshot shows the five items (selected) that I CAN get a context menu for without xplorer2 freezing.

I never tried these, because I never needed them. I wonder what is different about these items from every other file and folder?

Barb, here's some additional stuff that might be useful...

Uninstalled VIPRE antivirus...

Reinstalled Sandboxie (with UAC admin) - created a new sandbox without choosing or changing any settings - made NO alterations to sandbox configuration - and reinstalled xplorer2_lite (with UAC admin) into that new sandbox. Still the same right-click on file/folder freeze-up problem.

I utilized Sandboxie Resource Access Monitor (RAM) and Sysinternals Process Monitor (ProcMon) utility to track system activity when launching/running xplorer2.

RAM dialog shows where xplorer2 activity ends after finishing loading under Sandboxie. Nothing else appears in the RAM window while running xplorer2... not during a file selection - nor when right-clicking and getting the xplorer2 freeze-up.

I've attached (usefully labeled) screenshots that show the sequence of steps taken while testing xplorer2 in Sandboxie. There are 18 screenshots that I had to zip up into 3 files to fit the attachment limitations.

If the ProcMon data would be helpful, I have data captures from the individual testing steps, in both ProcMon's native PML format - as well as CSV file format - (but they range in size from 30 Kb to 88 Mb - so an upload site would be helpful, if available).

Hello CBruce,

I have removed the images as they did not really show anything specific and and made the thread hard to read.
Please see this:
viewtopic.php?p=104180#p104180

If you have an unfiltered Procmon log, please upload it to a file hosting site and provide the link so we can review it.

Regarding your last post, what are the permissions on the drives that are causing the issue?
I saw several USB drives listed, do they also present the issue?
Are you able to right-click on files/folders via Explorer in Sandboxie, without xplorer2?
Are you using any specific settings in xlplorer?
Are there any other applications installed on your computer that might be modifying Windows Explorer?

Regards,
Barb.-

Hi Barb,

OUCH! The same problem was present in a sandboxed Windows Explorer!

I had no addons to Windows Explorer - but when you said "modifying"... I uninstalled my Acronis True Image 2014 backup software, since it integrates into Windows Explorer to allow backups of individual folders and mounting of backup images.

The sandboxed xplorer2 and Windows Explorer now both let me right-click and get context menus on all files and folders!!!!

THANKS!... But now that we know what the cause of the problem is - is there anything that we can do about it?

I can't run my system without backups! And I need the backup image mount features that True Image provides.

(You folks are GREAT for taking the time to help me with this!!!)

Re: Acronis + Explorer / xplorer2_lite freeze after right-click on items

Post by Barb@Invincea » Tue Sep 19, 2017 3:01 pm

Hello CBruce,

I downloaded the current trial version for Acronis True Image 2018 (I was not able to find an official trial for 2014), and did not experience any issues with either Explorer or xplorer2. Try upgrading and see if that helps.

Otherwise, see if you can disable Acronis from monitoring your Sandboxed folders as listed here (not sure if this still applies, I was not able to test it and it was listed as a workaround for a different issue...but maybe it can help):
viewtopic.php?p=93678#p93678

If you are still experiencing problems, let's have you post the output of Res. Acc. Monitor using Explorer (not xplorer2), to see if we can spot Acronis there and, hopefully, try to open/block it in the Sandbox. For this one, start Res. Acc. Mon, then launch Explorer in the Sandbox and immediately right-click on something.

Regards,
Barb.-

Barb, I can't afford to upgrade Acronis right now, so I'll look at the other option.

When Virrtual2013 refers to having Acronis ignore the Sandboxie "virtual folder" - what exactly is the path that I will tell Acronis to ignore.

Thanks
Bruce
