firefox shockwave flash plugin crash

Post by Bertus » Fri Jul 19, 2013 3:41 pm

Hello tzuk,

The shockwave flash plugin crashes when I minimize firefox after playing a youtube video.

Follow these steps to crash the shockwave plugin:
- Run firefox sandboxed
- browse youtube and play a video
- pause the video
- minimize firefox
- make shore firefox is not selected by clicking somewhere else on the desktop with the mouse pointer
- wait for 11 sec and firefox brings up a unresponsive plugin message box

A workaround is to disable the crash protection in firefox (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-contai ... ss_plugins).

quote from kb article: "To prevent Firefox from terminating plugins it considers non-responsive, set dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs to -1 in about:config. This disables the plugin hang detector but does not disable OOPP or stop "plugin-container" from running; to do that, you must set the dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.* preferences to "false"

In short to disable crash protection in firefox:
- open firefox
- about:config
- set dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs to -1
- set dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to false

Maybe sandboxie is blocking firefox from checking the current state of the shockwave plugin. Firefox assumes that the plugin has crashed and brings up a unresponsive plugin message box.

System information:

Firefox 22.0
shockwave flash plugin 11.8.800.94
sandboxie 4.05.01 (32bit)
windows xp sp3

I am also seeing this issue in my XP SP3 computer (like yours). I reported it earlier, I am glad you are reporting it now as that make us two seeing this. I am working around it by disabling the Plugin container (changing: dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to false).

I tried to duplicate the problem when bo reported it, but was not able to duplicate it on XP SP3.
[EDIT]I couldn't duplicate this when I tried it again, but curiously my minimized Thunderbird window became unresponsive (using a different sandbox).
So, a second try (after terminating all sandboxed programs and again running sandboxed Firefox) using the above steps did result in the problem as reported.
I allowed "plugin-hang-ui.exe" to run (Start/Run Restrictions) and see that the Flash plugin has failed.

Clicking on "Stop plugin" allows Firefox to open again, but the Flash plugin has crashed the "plugin-container.exe" program.
Using Reload for that page: "plugin-container.exe" runs again, the video can be played.

When I first started experiencing this issue (after upgrading to V 4.03.04), this problem occurred just about every time I minimized Firefox with a YouTube video running. Now, after clean installing Firefox, I have to work to reproduce the problem in order for it to happen but it still happens often enough that its better for me to continue disabling Plugin container in order for the container not to crash.

Fix for Your Shockwave Flash Crashes

Post by Vikas Medhekar » Tue Jul 23, 2013 4:43 am

First of all, check the system files and replace any corrupt versions. Some of the system files might be overwritten by third party applications. Shockwave Flash crashes when its files get replaced. So the first thing you have to do is to scan all system files with SFC (System File Checker) and restore their original versions.

1. Insert Windows installation disc, if you have. If you don't have it, buy it online.
2. Click the Start button, point to All Programs | Accessories.
3. Right click Command Prompt, select Run as Administrator option.
4. Command Prompt opens. Type following command-
SFC /SCANNOW
5. After the task is completed, type EXIT and press ENTER.

Now if you still experience the same problem, do scan your system with a good antivirus software. Malicious contents, infected scripts often crashes the Shockwave Flash.

The problem is not that the shockwave plugin craches. The problem is that firefox "thinks" the shockwave plugin has crashed and issues a plugin unresponsive message.
If the shockwave plugin was the problem then it would still crash even after disabling the crach protection in firefox. I have the crash protection disabled and the plugin does not crash.
