Infected Private Messages [SOLVED]

Post by yabbadoo » Tue Dec 27, 2016 11:05 am

I always use SBxie to open my browser, so lall my work is under SBxie protection.

We all know about email threats. I can open my OE6 with SBxie if need be. But what about Private Messages say on a Forum ? Opening them is just the same risk as email. The only thing is that all my Forums are subject to my browser, which is sandboxed.

Question ?
So, can opening a Private Message on a site within SBxie result in an infection within the sandbox that blocks the Server, even after reboot ?

The reason I ask is that I opened a Private Message on a Forum from a known pest and immediately the screen went blank and a panel came up saying the Server could not be contacted. I rebooted several times with no change and even tried an unsandboxed different browser, but the panel was still there. I was blocked from the Internet. I did a full Avast AV scan which came up clear, logged back onto my default browser and amazed to find that it was all OK again and back to normal. My Server said there had been no faults that morning in my location. I have no idea how all this happened and was cured.

The only other information I can give is that when I phoned my Server in the morning, the girl said something which I did not understand and then said "wait 10 minutes", which I did. I assumed that meant there was a problem. The girl in the afternoon said there had been no problems. It could be a miraculous coincidence that just when I opened the message, the Server went down.

yabbadoo,

Does the problem happen again when you open that same private message?
Programs running inside SBIE should not affect your host computer (unless you allow them to access certain things via templates).

yabbadoo,

Does the message contain a link that you can share? Or anything we can use to test?
Without information, logs/data/anything, there isn't much we can do to help.

The only link is my account message list URL, there is no link which pulls the message separately out of my account. So if another person uses that URL, it would be the same as if I did it myself.

The problem is that the message has to be opened to delete it, so it is sitting there like an unexploded bomb.

I am looking for a commitment from SBxie that a hackers work inside a Private Message within SBxie will not cause the kind of problem I described - blocking my Network/Server.

I have found a bodge-up method of deleting the messages - there are 4 of them all identical.

I used Remove it Permanently - RIP, a Firefox add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... rmanently/

It took 4 goes each message to completely remove the messages from my Forum message listing. The only blemish is that the Inbox still shows the 4 messages as being unread. I may see how to correct that, but if not I can live with it. At least they are gone off my message listing.

Before I leave this issue, can I please ask if email details - password etc - are protected under SBxie when opening a possible threat email ?
